Any time you buy tickets for a plane flight, unless your family reserves an entire row, you're putting yourself at great risk. We're not talking about the plane going down -- the odds of that happening are absurdly low. But the odds of sitting next to someone you don't want to sit next to are much, much worse. That's why airBaltic is experimenting with a mood-based seating system, to give passengers a chance to narrow down their seating buddies.
According to The New York Daily News, "SeatBuddy" gives passengers four different "flight moods" to choose from: business talk, easy chat, work, and relax. A seating algorithm then takes those choices into account when assigning seats. The program also offers optional detailed matching by age, language, career, interests, etc. It's like a temporary social media profile, just for that flight. Does it sound like something you'd want to try?

thanks for proving my point about your ILK
I don't smoke, personally, but I support people's right to do it, if they want.
Also you would then block anyone with asthma from the plane as the smoke could cause minor attacks right up to anaphylaxis.
Don't kill the messenger.
I'm also a smoker. I grew up in a smoking household. I don't have asthma. I also don't have any kids living in my household.
But the numbers don't lie. Kids who live in smoking households have loads more allergies, asthma, colds & coughs, etc.
Balance.
A little grime, a little soap... & not that anti-bacterial crap.
But there's no disputing the facts about kids growing up in smoking households.
What is a major short term concern would be asthma and those with it. Smoke from cigarettes in such a confined space could cause minor attacks all the way up anaphylaxis depending on how asthmatic the person is.
In addition those with emphysema, and other lung conditions making their tidal volume less would not be able to breathe well. Older individuals may just have general breathing problems from it.
The smell would make unpleasant environment for those around you and in the plane and it would disturb kids therefore making the plane even more unpleasant as they whine.
Lets move on to inherent risk. What if you dropped that cigarette while sleeping and your chair went up in flames. I once rescued a man from a burning trailed who had done that - he died of burns several hours later. However that's besides the point as in confined space it would be difficult to control the blaze - you'd all suffocate before it ran out of oxygen...and even if it did you'd be screwed. So that in itself is a major...

I know we all like smoking, it's cool, I get you.......but it doesn't belong on an airplane. There's too much risk, too many problems, and why would you want to be THAT guy that ruins everyone else's experience?
I agree with your comments regarding smoking's affects on others.
However, I must say that the risk of a plane going up in flames because of someone falling asleep with a lit cigarette is unbelievably low, maybe even non-existent. I do not believe in the tactic of frightening people into believing something or another like that. In fact, I find it quite obnoxious.
The crew informed one flight I was on that the smoking section is out on the left wing.
;-)
It's far safer than traveling in an automobile.
hehehe.
Those little toilets really get nasty after an hour or so.
...but then again, I think most women stand up (okay, hover) to pee on airplanes.
