Airline Tests Mood-Based Seating: Smart or Silly?

Any time you buy tickets for a plane flight, unless your family reserves an entire row, you're putting yourself at great risk. We're not talking about the plane going down -- the odds of that happening are absurdly low. But the odds of sitting next to someone you don't want to sit next to are much, much worse. That's why airBaltic is experimenting with a mood-based seating system, to give passengers a chance to narrow down their seating buddies.

According to The New York Daily News, "SeatBuddy" gives passengers four different "flight moods" to choose from: business talk, easy chat, work, and relax. A seating algorithm then takes those choices into account when assigning seats. The program also offers optional detailed matching by age, language, career, interests, etc. It's like a temporary social media profile, just for that flight. Does it sound like something you'd want to try?

:-) I really wouldn't want to fly on a plane these day's, even if they did provide a smokers section.I like to get on SH and joke and have a good time. If I was flying on a plane with some of these fanatics I fear that as a smoker that I would be treated worse than a shoe bomber. LOL

That is exactly how a lot of non-smokers act and lord help the poor soul who might try to sneak a quick puff in the restroom these days. They would end up doing just as much if not more jail time than a terrorists... but that's OK, we still live in a perfectly sane, normal and rational free civil society. (sarc)

This is so true. but, isn't it ironic that some of these airlines are so cheap that they will not give you a free sample of planters peanuts, or a small plastic cup of Coca-Cola, but then they come up with a silly computer program call seat buddy? I do believe this world has gone crazy.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. this was a perfect solution for people in public situations. and, what really makes my blood boil, is when I am at the airport at a Atlanta Georgia. with all of these jet planes on the ground, waiting, waiting, and waiting, and all of these huge jet engines are blowing out exhaust emissions. wow none smoker fanatics complain about smokeless cigarette in my hand as I am trying to calm my nerves. it has been said that people pick and choose their own battles. and this is so true. for here we are in the year of our Lord, 2012, and the non-smokers are fighting a battle that was settled 50 years ago.

Just as not everyone who stays away stays healthy. Second hand smoke can cause cancer, even in small concentrated doses. It's up to your immune system. There's plenty of medical journals on the topic.

Also you would then block anyone with asthma from the plane as the smoke could cause minor attacks right up to anaphylaxis.

Shame there are growing numbers of people with asthma, allergies, and other weaknesses. We should do something about that. Let kids get dirty more, and not be so paranoid, maybe...

Well, actually (sorry to butt in here, but...) there are loads of studies that say that kids whose parents smoke have far higher rates of asthma than kids in smoke-free households.

    Don't kill the messenger.
I'm also a smoker. I grew up in a smoking household. I don't have asthma. I also don't have any kids living in my household.
But the numbers don't lie. Kids who live in smoking households have loads more allergies, asthma, colds & coughs, etc.
  • GLaDOS Grammar... 2012/06/17 04:36:04

Studies also show that children raised in squeaky-clean households, and are kept extremely clean, are more likely to have weak immune systems and are more likely to be asthmatic as well.

    Likely true.
    Balance.
A little grime, a little soap... & not that anti-bacterial crap.
But there's no disputing the facts about kids growing up in smoking households.

Here we are on the internet and we are not on an airplane.Chances are you will never see me,and thank God I will never see you.You don't have to smoke to get cancer,my girlfriends son-n law has Leukemia (which is cancer) and he never smoked a cigarette in his life.He also lives in a non smoking environment. There are all sorts of different kinds of cancer, not just lung cancer. In my opinion most cancers are caused by people inhaling to many exhaust, cosmetic, and iron working residue.

There's no need to take the risk either way. Cancer isn't the biggest concern anyways. I have one degree in medicine, I'm working on another now, and in 3 years when I leave the military I am considering med school. just to let you know up front - I know some background about this stuff.

What is a major short term concern would be asthma and those with it. Smoke from cigarettes in such a confined space could cause minor attacks all the way up anaphylaxis depending on how asthmatic the person is.

In addition those with emphysema, and other lung conditions making their tidal volume less would not be able to breathe well. Older individuals may just have general breathing problems from it.

The smell would make unpleasant environment for those around you and in the plane and it would disturb kids therefore making the plane even more unpleasant as they whine.

Lets move on to inherent risk. What if you dropped that cigarette while sleeping and your chair went up in flames. I once rescued a man from a burning trailed who had done that - he died of burns several hours later. However that's besides the point as in confined space it would be difficult to control the blaze - you'd all suffocate before it ran out of oxygen...and even if it did you'd be screwed. So that in itself is a major...

I know we all like smoking, it's cool, I get you.......but it doesn't belong on an airplane. There's too much risk, too many problems, and why would you want to be THAT guy that ruins everyone else's experience?

I wonder how many planes went down in a blaze from some schmuck falling asleep with a lit cigarette before 1990?

I agree with your comments regarding smoking's affects on others.
However, I must say that the risk of a plane going up in flames because of someone falling asleep with a lit cigarette is unbelievably low, maybe even non-existent. I do not believe in the tactic of frightening people into believing something or another like that. In fact, I find it quite obnoxious.

There's no such thing as a smoking "section". Planes are too small. If you smoke, I have to second hand smoke. Why not a smoking plane?

I totally agree with that, but if I could save my money and get my own plane that would be pretty cool. But,if I had my own private plane somebody would sue me because I didn't hire a non smoker on my flight crew. :-)

Come to think of it... I could understand outlawing standing up to pee on airplanes.
