After 20 years of teaching, teacher fired because of something in her mother's obituary!

Roger47 2013/04/20 16:11:30
Carla Hale had been a PE teacher at the same school for 20 years. Then her mother died. In her mother's obituary, it listed Carla's partner by name. Someone reading the obituary notified the school, and she was immediately fired. She had always kept her personal life private. It had never been an issue in the performance of her job. But when the school learned that her domestic partner was another woman, apparently that was all that mattered.
Is what the school did the moral thing to do?

I heard about this sad story. I think it is shameful that people can be so cruel about something that has absolutely no effect on their own lives. And what makes it worse is that if this teacher sues the school (which I sincerely hope she does), the attacks she will undoubtedly have to suffer from the conservatives will be horrendous.

This is absurd Her private life at home has nothing to do with the quality of her job at school... Can they even do that.?

Her personal partner should not affect her work status.

What's moral got to do with it? It should be illegal. Unless she's got a contract that says she can't be gay, the school fired her without cause.

Sniff, sniff... I think I smell a lawsuit..

Morally, no. But was there a contractual clause relating to this issue?

That's absurd. Why would you fire a great teacher for being gay?

There is no link, but based on the other comments I'm assuming it was a private school? While its heinous and definitely immoral for someone to be fired for no other reason but their sexual orientation, she works for a private school and they can make up their own rules. Just another story proving the lengths bigots will go.

What's the worst thing about this story is that someone had to physically write a letter to the church using the final words about her mother against her. That person is a selfish, hateful, disgusting human being.

I see discrimination law suit written all over this. This is horrible and extremely wrong.

The article said that she was protected by the anti-discrimination law , so she does have a case. And I hope she sues the pants off of them!

Sounds like a MAJOR discrimination lawsuit to me and she will win BIG time. She can now retire and spend the rest of her time enjoying her life instead of having to worry about the a holes that she worked for.

What the religious school did was, of course heinous; but if you get a job at a racist, bigoted, and morally stunted organization you pretty much know what to expect. This organization has never hidden it's bigotry, and actually proudly display their homophobia at every opportunity. It has always surprised me that parents still turn their children over to this group of perverts, sadists, and the chronologically out of place in the 21st century.

Private school. It's their rules. Completely justified (even if you don't agree with the action).

I don't necessarily support the decision, but private schools can set their own rules.

Once again, the RCC thinks it is above the civil law of the land. Seems it is about time to really put the screws to them and make them pay!!!

No it was not moral. It was immoral and stupid. Hope the school gets successfully sued.

    Sickening!

This is why we need to pass ENDA (Employment non-discrimination act).
There's nothing wrong with lesbians and gay people. We just want to work, live and enjoy our lives like you do.
