Public support for the war in Afghanistan has sunk to a new low of just 30
percent and for the first time a majority of Republicans say the war was not
worth fighting, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed.

When asked if the
war in Afghanistan was worth fighting, 66 percent said no and just 30 percent
said yes. Among Republicans, 55 percent said it was not worth the
cost.

Support for the war has been declining for years and first dipped into negative
numbers in 2009. The war has claimed the lives of some 2,000 Americans and
wounded more than 15,000.

The poll numbers could reverberate in the
presidential election. President Obama has set the end of 2014 as the date when
all U.S. combat troops are to be removed from country that the United States and
its allies invaded in 2001 in retaliation for the 9/11 attacks.

However,
GOP challenger Mitt Romney has said the United States should first defeat the
Taliban on the battlefield, the Post reported.
