Actors Use 'Shocking Language' in 'Not Acceptable' PSA: Was This a Good Strategy?

During the season finale of "Glee," the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign aired a public service announcement, which advocated ending the use of the term "retard."

The “Not Acceptable” PSA...began with an African-American man saying, “It is not all right to call me a [N-word.]” Except the actor didn’t say “N-word”; he used the actual noun.

Other actors then chimed in with other slurs associated with their race, religion or sexual orientation. Needless to say, it was pretty shocking to hear language like this during a teen-focused dramedy about a show choir.

“Glee” actors Jane Lynch and Lauren Potter appeared at the end of the PSA to say that it’s not acceptable to use the “R-word,” either to describe the intellectually disabled or in casual conversation, just as it’s not okay to use any other demeaning words.

Was saying these slurs on television a good way to deter the use of the "R-word"?

Black people can say the n-word; white people can't. If you can't comprehend the logic behind that, you're officially permitted to say the r-word.

This was a STUPID commercial. So stupid.
The word Retard means what? Stupid, slow, dumb? True: It does define mentally challenged people to many, however....I feel like they should be called mentally challenged than retarded.

I use the word Retard a lot, and I'm going to continue doing so because these adults which get pissed off at other when they say retard....are just retarded themselves. Their children are mentally challenged, not retarded. To say they're retarded is really just an insult to them. There's a movement trying to claim this word for the mentally challenged/disabled and it's demeaning to those who are mentally challenged to try to claim the term retard solely for them.

    Stupid.
I know this wasn't quite the question, but this is what I wanted to say.

Interesting thought. For now, I try not to say "retard" because it still carries the association of mentally challenged people. But "idiot" once meant mentally challenged, also. Now it's perfectly acceptable to use to call someone stupid and nobody even thinks of what it used to mean. I'm betting the same will happen with "retard."

You know what...you're absolutely right. When I was a kid, people used to use retarded more often to refer to mentally handicapped people, then as I grew up it became less and less acceptable to do that. I honestly thought that word with that usage was somewhat obsolete now. It hasn't been PC to use that word for a long time. Now all of a sudden there's this campaign out of nowhere against "the r-word". Like they have claimed it, like you were saying and now no one is supposed to say retarded at all ! Even though it's common usage nowadays is to mean stupid, dumb, etc.

Retard actually does mean slow. I remember when some road signs read "retard speed", meaning slow down. Just like gay means happy and cheerful, but now it's a word you aren't supposed to say.

Why can't people use the word gay? That's stupid too. -.- You'd think the homosexual community would be fine with just taking 'Fag.'
Although I think you're not supposed to say gay in a demeaning way about someones sexuality. Gay does not mean slow, stupid, or retarded...Even though many teenagers would use it as such a word.

You know what I mean, right? lol. That's basically how teenagers use it, as well as also referring to gay people. Usually during their insults they like to stick with more offensive terms than gay, like fag or something.

Why are we even thinking about using "N-word" and "R-Word" in PSA's? We need to stop hiding the truth. These words can hurt some people and it needs to be stopped.

Let's all pretend not to be 5 year olds. These words exist and they are spoken every day. What's the point of hushing those who are trying to put a spotlight on the issue? Teenagers and young people hear these words in school, at home, around their friends; hearing them on television isn't going to do irreparable damage to their oh-so-delicate sensibilities.
