Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al-Saud of Saudi Arabia, through his Kingdom Holding Company, owns 7% of News Corp.'s shares, making Kingdom Holdings the second largest shareholder.

In 2002, Al-Waleed donated 18.5 million British pounds (US$27 million) to the families of Palestinians during a TV telethon following Israeli operations in the West Bank city of Jenin. The telethon was ordered by Saudi King Fahd to help relatives of Palestinian martyrs. The Saudi government maintained the term "martyrs" referred not to suicide bombers but to "Palestinians [who are] victimized by Israeli terror and violence

Prince Alwaleed actually owns more shares than Rupert Murdoch owns personally. Rupert only owns 1.3%. Additionally, the Prince holds "B" Shares which carry voting rights as opposed to non-voting investment shares.

Old people are very stuck in their thinking- they will vote party line even if the party is killing them but maybe that will change this year.

Not at all- I said the MAJORITY. No one is marginalizing the elderly and they are a voting force to be reckoned with but as any psychologist will tell you as people age they become more rigid in their thinking and less open to change which explains why many older people have stayed with the Republicans even though many of their policies and plans hurt seniors.
  • JanHopkins 2012 Obama 2012/03/25 19:16:58

I myself am 60. I've voted for both parties in the past depending on the candidate and I intend to vote in the best interest of my country for the rest of my life. I do not consider that rigid at all. I would like to see a lot less special interest groups and fanaticism from both parties and a lot more rolling up sleeves and getting the important jobs done.

I would never say all elderly are rigid in their thinking and have met and worked with many that think as you. BUT our country is going through a transition and we have the "old" school generation from before the 50s that had very rigid party ideology and the more modern seniors that have kept up with a changing society. Eventually seniors will become less rigid if the modern seniors are an example.

My plan is for a national lottery and online gambling so we don't have to raise taxes but reality is there are going to have to be spending cuts and higher taxes until the economy can recover on it's own. It is just a matter of where and how much each side is willing to sacrifice.
  • JanHopkins 2012 Obama 2012/03/25 21:30:53

Although a national lottery sounds good on the surface I have not noticed that the Michigan lottery which was supposed to help support the schools has been very successful. I think we could save billions by diverting all that foreign aid money back into our own monetary system. I think the unions should push congress into creating an environment in which American industry can return to our own shores. I think schools should teach more trade oriented classes for those who know quite well they have no intention or ability in the academic arena. I think we should cut out the lifetime benefits for politicians. They have figured out that they get payed whether they do their jobs or not. I think we should get out of the world policing business and start rebuilding our own country. Let's build a very strong defense but don't use it unless attacked. I'm sitting here trying to figure out if my opinions are to the right or to the left. I really don't know. Somebody needs to take an honest look at our banking system and a close look at wall street. Something is hinkey there. Roads and bridges definitly need work and I would like to see it done by American workers. Slums need to be torn down and replaced with either viable living quarters or with meadows and forests whichever is needed in that area the most. Detroit has lost a huge number of residents. It would be a perfect place to regenerate some nature.

Well what do you know- I found another Moderate with sound ideas!

Nice to meet you and we have a lot in common in our thinking.

I can agree with everything you said and it is new technology, education and innovation that will save this country.

Time to get rid of the good old boy subsidies and put the money into helping entrepreneurs and inventers and schools that will create new jobs based on new technology.

We need to take back that role from China and other countries and the US has gotten lazy.

Banks and wall street needs outside oversite and the teeth to punish the execs and I would change the laws so when a corporation files bankruptcy the execs lose some personal wealth. That would make them think twice before thy take huge risks with investors money.

Reducing or eliminating our dependence on foreign oil would make us safer and we could then reduce our military costs. We would have few reasons to go to war if it we did not need oil.

We need to adress the problems in mexico either through sanctions, UN actions or joint actions with mexico to end the drug cartell violence, close the borders, make legal immigration easier for those that want to work, and build schools and businesses in Mexico so they don't have to come here to survive.

Can't the schools be built with private donations rather than federal donations? If we build schools in one foreign country we are going to have a line outside the door of every other foreign country demanding schools. And this at a time when our own schools are suffering cutbacks.
  • 2012 Obama JanHopkins 2012/03/26 01:12:26

It takes millions in bonds to build a US school and not to many private donors or businesses want to get in the business of education but some charter schools are doing well.

Expense for building schools in foreign countries is very small compared to US and they don't require much. Just some place to meet and to have books, internet, and good teachers available.

I traveled through SA and the education system is non existant. 90% illiteracy and no hope of a future. That is why they are attracted to the drug trade.

No kidding? The Latinos that I meet seem pretty well educated to me, even those who just recently got here.
Why can't we simplify American education in the method you just specified and that way we could afford to help the Mexicans educate as well?

The ones you meet here have probably been educated in US schools or from a border town where schooling is better. In rural mexico SA there is very little education.

We have too many people that make money from building schools and are sitting on school boards as directors.

I was a professional educator for many years. It is all a game played for money by the administrators and the kids are the ones getting hurt.

Public education needs a major overhaul!

Yes. I can agree with you on that.
I haven't been in a school in twenty years so I am not certain what is going on inside them but I do see the results sometimes. And I do wonder what in the world all that money is being spent on.
