Abortions Have Made Life Better for Millions Of Men: It's About Time to Speak Up in Support

Pro-choice activists have been saying for at least three decades that the landscape of the abortion debate won't permanently change until women are brave enough to do what gays did 30 years ago -- emerge from the shadows, speak our truth and demand respect for our decisions.
One in three women in America will have an abortion at some point in her life. There are roughly twice as many abortions as LASIK procedures performed in any given year. Given that overwhelming prevalence, it's high time for women who have had abortions to come out, step up, stand by their choices -- and refuse delivery on all attempts to burden them with regret or shame.
The GOP's legislative "war on women" and Darcy Burner's controversial "take a stand" moment at Netroots Nation have brought renewed vigor to solving the invisibility problem, sparking new campaigns to encourage women to reject right-wing attempts to shame and silence them. It's important work, with huge potential to change the way we talk about abortion for decades to come.
But through all of this fresh energy and determination, there's one set of big, deep voices that's conspicuously missing.
We need to hear from the men, too.

I disagree with using abortion as a family planning tool.
Ultimately it should be up to the states to decide. If folks in California want that law but folks in Arizona don't, then we should respect their choice.
As a young woman, I think the best way to prevent abortions is education and, included in that, a strong, comprehensive sex education program. It's my opinion that such a program should include abstinence education. Advising young people, especially teenagers, not to have sex is a positive thing; however, as you may know, the rush of hormones in the teenage years results in young people having sex. It's best to educate them about that possibility, ways to protect themselves not only against pregnancy but also against disease and, combined with that, a family dynamic that includes moral teachings/responsibilities within the family unit and a family dynamic that encourages young people to feel comfortable in talking with Mom and Dad.

Should you be unaware, the OT god killed the child of David and Bathsheba allegedly for David's sin. What kind of god would do such a thing?
I will never understand a conservative woman's stance against the rights of women and, darcie, abortion isn't murder. That's your opinion not a legal fact. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but you do NOT have the right to impose a narrow minded religious view upon all women.
It's interesting conservative religious folks go on and on about abortion allegedly being murder but, typically, they're the first to line up behind a president who invades sovereign nations resulting in the deaths of countless children. Conservatives typically use "thou shalt not kill" to condemn women who obtain abortions but refuse to apply that commandment to conservative presidents who illegally invade sovereign nations and kill innocent children.

Across the United States, conservatives, most often conservative men, are enacting laws that have a tremendous negative impact on women's rights and women's health. There's no justification for these laws unless, of course, conservative men, and conservative women like you, hold Aristotle's view of women to the point where a woman can't accurately refer to parts of her body as occurred in Michigan.
Aristotle believed women were more material (carnal) and men more rational (active). In Aristotle's mind, the fully developed human is male, and a woman 'is as it were a deformed male' (Generation of Animals, 737a. 28). This belief has had an extremely negative impact on western culture, especially Christianity, because it leads to the view that a woman's body is profane rather than sacred. Unfortunately, this leads to the point where male, conservative legislators consider mentioning the parts of a woman's body in public as somehow offensive.
I'm only 20 years old, but I have no intention of permitting, without a serious fight, extremely right wing conservatives to control my body or the bodies of other women. My mother and my grandmother fought for women's rights, including the right to a safe, legal abortion, and I'll continue that struggle even marching in the streets if I must. As old as my grandmother is now, she's expressed that she's more than willing to engage in the struggle again and fight against the misogyny one sees among conservatives today.
Finally, if you're so concerned about the government or insurance companies paying for birth control pills, let me know where I can witness you protesting/marching/demanding an end to the government/insurance companies paying for Viagra or penile implants. Otherwise, I'll consider you another conservative hypocrite.

Conservatives, it seems, tend to live in a world dominated by fear such as irrational fear of a terrorist attack or, closer to home, an irrational fear of a black president.
The U.S. military is bloated and should be severely trimmed; some of our founding fathers argued against standing armies because they were believed to pose a threat to democracy. Reducing the military budget by two-thirds would free up money for infrastructure repair, health care and education. Finally, the U.S. military contributes to the militarization of American society; it poses a grave threat to freedom.
