Abortions Have Made Life Better for Millions Of Men: It's About Time to Speak Up in Support

Samantha 2012/06/26 14:51:35
Pro-choice activists have been saying for at least three decades that the landscape of the abortion debate won't permanently change until women are brave enough to do what gays did 30 years ago -- emerge from the shadows, speak our truth and demand respect for our decisions.

One in three women in America will have an abortion at some point in her life. There are roughly twice as many abortions as LASIK procedures performed in any given year. Given that overwhelming prevalence, it's high time for women who have had abortions to come out, step up, stand by their choices -- and refuse delivery on all attempts to burden them with regret or shame.

The GOP's legislative "war on women" and Darcy Burner's controversial "take a stand" moment at Netroots Nation have brought renewed vigor to solving the invisibility problem, sparking new campaigns to encourage women to reject right-wing attempts to shame and silence them. It's important work, with huge potential to change the way we talk about abortion for decades to come.

But through all of this fresh energy and determination, there's one set of big, deep voices that's conspicuously missing.

We need to hear from the men, too.

so what about the women that have to live with themselves everyday after making the decision to abort it is easier to make the decision to abort than it is to look in the mirror and sleep with yourself afterwards, of course the millions of men your referring to are the irresponsible good for nothing kind that dont want to support their children, they would rather have consentual sex and kill their kid afterwards, its called responsibility this poll is disgusting to think that people think like this, abortion is wrong unless its a life or death matter, or a matter of sexual assault at the time of conception, but seriously if your a man that feels this way then you deserve obama as a leader, and you probably should have been a blow job it is only the womans right to choose, and most women dont want it, they are forced into the decision by an irresponsible man, unless they are rape, incest, or complications, most women want to keep it even if they know they shouldnt its an alternative to carrying full term when there is something else wrong, it makes no sense that women feel this way, all that I have talked to regret it later

I don't believe the decision to abort is an easy one, but it's best made by a woman, her doctor and, if she chooses, a religious advisor. Your post, especially the middle part, is vulgar and disgusting. Can you not formulate a more reasonable argument? If you oppose abortion so much, would you join me in asking Congress to enact mandatory and comprehensive sex education classes for all children? Doing so will lead to less abortions.

Samantha thanks for your post. I am pro-life but i understand that abortion is necessary in cases of rape, incest, danger to the mother, etc...
I disagree with using abortion as a family planning tool.
Ultimately it should be up to the states to decide. If folks in California want that law but folks in Arizona don't, then we should respect their choice.

Blue, you and I agree, for the most part, regarding abortion. I believe it should be legally available in the cases you mentioned. We also agree it should never be used for family planning or gender selection. I'm not a proponent of states' rights especially when the issue is individual rights. As you know, since Roe v. Wade, federal courts have narrowed, in some cases, access to abortion. My stance on states' rights is due, in part, to the ugly history of those words in our history. I'm confident you are aware of that history.

As a young woman, I think the best way to prevent abortions is education and, included in that, a strong, comprehensive sex education program. It's my opinion that such a program should include abstinence education. Advising young people, especially teenagers, not to have sex is a positive thing; however, as you may know, the rush of hormones in the teenage years results in young people having sex. It's best to educate them about that possibility, ways to protect themselves not only against pregnancy but also against disease and, combined with that, a family dynamic that includes moral teachings/responsibilities within the family unit and a family dynamic that encourages young people to feel comfortable in talking with Mom and Dad.

Thanks for that wonderful answer Samantha. I believe that it is ultimately none of the govt's business what you do with your body, therefore the people at the state level can decide the laws they want to abide by without a constitutional amendment.

I doubt that's going to happen as long as U.S. oil companies are making billions of dollars in profits or the U.S. continues to fund Israeli state-sponsored terrorism and expansionism resulting in the deaths of Palestinian children. Terrorism is wrong no matter who does it, but the U.S. seems to turn a blind eye to Israeli terrorism and killing innocent children.

Should you be unaware, the OT god killed the child of David and Bathsheba allegedly for David's sin. What kind of god would do such a thing?

I will never understand a conservative woman's stance against the rights of women and, darcie, abortion isn't murder. That's your opinion not a legal fact. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but you do NOT have the right to impose a narrow minded religious view upon all women.

It's interesting conservative religious folks go on and on about abortion allegedly being murder but, typically, they're the first to line up behind a president who invades sovereign nations resulting in the deaths of countless children. Conservatives typically use "thou shalt not kill" to condemn women who obtain abortions but refuse to apply that commandment to conservative presidents who illegally invade sovereign nations and kill innocent children.

Conservatives typically use "thou shalt not kill" to condemn women who obtain abortions but refuse to apply that commandment to conservative presidents who illegally invade sovereign nations and kill innocent children.

Across the United States, conservatives, most often conservative men, are enacting laws that have a tremendous negative impact on women's rights and women's health. There's no justification for these laws unless, of course, conservative men, and conservative women like you, hold Aristotle's view of women to the point where a woman can't accurately refer to parts of her body as occurred in Michigan.

Aristotle believed women were more material (carnal) and men more rational (active). In Aristotle's mind, the fully developed human is male, and a woman 'is as it were a deformed male' (Generation of Animals, 737a. 28). This belief has had an extremely negative impact on western culture, especially Christianity, because it leads to the view that a woman's body is profane rather than sacred. Unfortunately, this leads to the point where male, conservative legislators consider mentioning the parts of a woman's body in public as somehow offensive.

I'm only 20 years old, but I have no intention of permitting, without a serious fight, extremely right wing conservatives to control my body or the bodies of other women. My mother and my grandmother fought for women's rights, including the right to a safe, legal abortion, and I'll continue that struggle even marching in the streets if I must. As old as my grandmother is now, she's expressed that she's more than willing to engage in the struggle again and fight against the misogyny one sees among conservatives today.

Finally, if you're so concerned about the government or insurance companies paying for birth control pills, let me know where I can witness you protesting/marching/demanding an end to the government/insurance companies paying for Viagra or penile implants. Otherwise, I'll consider you another conservative hypocrite.

right when a woman kills her unborn and does not inform the man he gets pissed and depressed this is barbaric to think that some really accept this as a prevention method, the idea of prevention is preventing conception, not to wait til conception then cut the lifeline

There is no 'war on women' although is does make for nice political rhetoric. If a woman chooses abortion, then I think that's between her, her doctor and her conscience. However, I should NOT have to pay for it.

Why do those on the right have issues with facts and science? All he has to do is research the anti-women's rights laws enacted by conservative legislatures; it's easy. However, I don't think Sick is interested in those facts, and I'm doubting Sick really isn't that "sick" of big government especially related to military budgets, Social Security/Medicare for his relatives or when he drives on an interstate highway.

  • Samantha SickOfB... 2012/06/27 00:23:21 (edited)
    Samantha
My chances of being killed by a terrorist are about one in 20 million. To compare, my risk of dying in a car accident, as my parents were, is 1 in 19,000, my chance of drowning in a bathtub is 1 in 800,000, my chance of dying in a building fire is 1 in 99,000, and my chance of being struck by lightning is 1 in 5,500,000. In other words, I'm far more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a terrorist.

Conservatives, it seems, tend to live in a world dominated by fear such as irrational fear of a terrorist attack or, closer to home, an irrational fear of a black president.

The U.S. military is bloated and should be severely trimmed; some of our founding fathers argued against standing armies because they were believed to pose a threat to democracy. Reducing the military budget by two-thirds would free up money for infrastructure repair, health care and education. Finally, the U.S. military contributes to the militarization of American society; it poses a grave threat to freedom.

maybe because the RWNJ feels that there should be sexual responsibility, its kinda ridiculous that sex is meant to be a bond, and now its just an immoral action of our society, you lay down with someone, and in the morning you find out you had an uh oh now your running to the person that can legally kill your baby murder is murder, i support right to choose but only under circumstances that call for an alternative you should not be permitted to have an abortion because of the childs sex, that would make the pregnancy in the middle to last term, there used to be laws that protected unborn from being brutally murdered once they reached a certain number of weeks into the pregnancy, this is ridiculous that abortion is now being used as family planning you should make sure whomever your lying with is ready to be part of your family, unless circumstances like rape incest or complications apply, you should talk to someone that has to live with themselves after the procedure, or better yet a man that knew she was pregnant then she told him not to worry about it because she had the procedure done
