Aaron Sorkin has some words for Sarah Palin

Some great op-ed commentary from Aaron Sorkin concerning Sarah Palin's new TV show, and sport-killing moose.

"Unless you've never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather chair or eaten meat, save your condemnation."

You're right, Sarah, we'll all just go fuck ourselves now.

The snotty quote was posted by Sarah Palin on (like all the great
frontier women who've come before her) her Facebook page to respond to
the criticism she knew and hoped would be coming after she hunted,
killed and carved up a Caribou during a segment of her truly awful
reality show, Sarah Palin's Alaska, broadcast on The-Now-Hilariously-Titled Learning Channel.

I eat meat, chicken and fish, have shoes and furniture made of
leather, and PETA is not ever going to put me on the cover of their
brochure and for these reasons Palin thinks it's hypocritical of me to
find what she did heart-stoppingly disgusting. I don't think it is, and
here's why.

Like 95% of the people I know, I don't have a visceral (look it up)
problem eating meat or wearing a belt. But like absolutely everybody I
know, I don't relish the idea of torturing animals. I don't enjoy the
fact that they're dead and I certainly don't want to volunteer to be the
one to kill them and if I were picked to be the one to kill them in
some kind of Lottery-from-Hell, I wouldn't do a little dance of joy
while I was slicing the animal apart.

I'm able to make a distinction between you and me without feeling the
least bit hypocritical. I don't watch snuff films and you make them.
You weren't killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion, you
were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals. I can make the
distinction between the two of us but I've tried and tried and for the
life of me, I can't make a distinction between what you get paid to do
and what Michael Vick went to prison for doing. I'm able to make the
distinction with no pangs of hypocrisy even though I get happy every
time one of you faux-macho shitheads accidentally shoots another one of
you in the face.

So I don't think I will save my condemnation, you phony pioneer girl.
(I'm in film and television, Cruella, and there was an insert close-up
of your manicure while you were roughing it in God's country. I know
exactly how many feet off camera your hair and make-up trailer was.)

And you didn't just do it for fun and you didn't just do it for
money. That was the first moose ever murdered for political gain. You
knew there'd be a protest from PETA and you knew that would be an
opportunity to hate on some people, you witless bully. What a uniter
you'd be -- bringing the right together with the far right.

(Let me be the first to say that I abused cocaine and was arrested
for it in April 2001. I want to be the first to say it so that when
Palin's Army of Arrogant Assholes, bereft of any reasonable rebuttal,
write it all over the internet tomorrow they will at best be the
second.)

I eat meat, there are leather chairs in my office, Sarah Palin is deranged and The Learning Channel should be ashamed of itself.

Palin is a gross human being. Anyone that would kill an animal just for specific votes, is well, a conservative. I know they have no integrity, honor, or values, but missing ten times and making the guy next to her shoot it is funny. She sucks in one more hilarious way. Almost every other group would be able to realize that she is just posing as something in order to get a vote, but conservatives who are dumber than dumb, love the misogynistic tone that her missing leaves. She so cute in her attempt to do what a real man should do, kill an animal for no reason, but she couldn't do it on the first, second, or even the tenth shot. Now, we all know it was edited to look as if she hit it, but who cares, it is just hilarious that she is still being accepted by the same group she insults just by intending for them to be that stupid to be convinced into voting for her, through reality T.V. Only in America.

    Meh.
I'll start by saying I think Sarah Palin is a joke.
Almost no one actually needs to hunt for survival these days, since most of us can go to the store and get meat and other forms of food. Hunters (I'm not one) don't hunt because they enjoy torturing animals (the idea that hunting and what Michael Vick did are similar is ludicrous, hunters don't make deer fight each other and then only kill the loser, Michael Vick didn't eat his dogs), they enjoy A) eating the meat from the animals they hunt and B) they like developing and using skills that make them much more a part of nature than simply rolling up to Mickey D's and ordering a Big Mac. Personally, I think her show sucks and I think she wants to turn her family into the Karadashians, but I don't really have a problem with anyone hunting.

I live in Wisconsin, and hunting here is considered a sport. I can find little worthwhile in the activity, but the truth is that we have too many deer here. Either hunters hunt them, or the DNR does, or they end up as roadkill (destroying a car and possibly people in the meantime).

If deer could choose, I think they would pick a quick fairly quick death from a bullet over the slow death of starvation and accompanying disease, or the awful death of having your hip bones destroyed by a car.

Real hunters are generally polite people who do not get in your face about it. They understand that there are people who are upset by killing, and they do not seek controversy. They are fairly decent people, by and large. I appreciate their "sport" as much as I appreciate NASCAR or WWF, but the truth is that it's not my business to dictate how they enjoy their lives.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, seeks to get in people's faces. She seeks controversy to make political gain. She is not a decent human being.

That said, why on earth would anyone watch the show, unless they were a Palin fan? I saw a scene (by mistake) as I was flipping channels, and it bothered me. So... I didn't watch any more. There are 100+ channels, and probably at least 6 to 7 that are halfway decent. Even if you count The Learning Channel as one of them, you don't have to watch it ALL THE TIME -- watch something else while her show is on. Or read a book.

I had a similar discussion with someone defending her shooting wolves from a helicopter, siting the ecological need for the practice. I think that nature will manage the wolf population, but, beyond that, it's one thing to sign a bill, it's another thing to be the person whose job it is to carry out the order, and it's yet another to find pure joy in the act of animal slaughter. The woman is demented.

Nature *would* manage the wolf population, if human civilization had not encroached so drastically on their habitat.

There are people who study wildlife populations. Virtually all agree that human management of certain species has become necessary. There must, therefore, be people willing to shoot deer, or shoot wolves, or whatever.

Imagine how horrible it would be if you had to personally kill the animals you eat or use, and the ones that invade your farm or threaten your livestock. Be glad there is someone else willing to do those tasks for you. If they get the jollies in a creepy way from their job, they are still preventing you from having to do it. Be glad, and just don't invite them to parties.

hunting out of necessity is one thing. Hunting for the sport and torture of it, and calling yourself a lover of nature is hypocrisy.
  • Edwin scblues... 2010/12/17 20:00:38

You can love some aspects of nature, even if you enjoy hunting. Nature is more than the happy peaceful love of deer and bunnies. Nature can be vicious and violent.

But more than that, nature is also trees, streams, undergrowth, birds taking suddenly to wing, the smell of loam, the feel of a breeze on your face without the smells of the city. Hunters enjoy hiking and being outdoors. These are parts of nature.

Hunters also enjoy tracking prey and hunting it. That is ALSO part of nature. Some enjoy watching an animal die, but they are a minority.

There is no hypocrisy in enjoying the outdoors, the natural setting, the hunt. These are natural things.

I wouldn't want to do it -- I would be too upset at the dying part. But animals die -- whether hunters are there or not. Hunters are just not as squeamish about that part. Probably they do not feel as deeply about animals as I do. But they still love nature.
