CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Cars lined the street outside St. James Episcopal Church on James Island as an overflow of mourners paid their respects to 17-year-old Marley Lion Thursday.

Even those who didn't know him stood outside the church. Among those, Jimmy Hill, who lives near the church.

"I think it's just disgusting how people could do this to people, and there's no reason for it at all," Hill said.

Diane Ross attended the service. She's the principal at Goodwin Elementary School where Lion's mother is a teacher.

"He would come in to help her with her room and volunteer at the school. He was just here the last week of school, and I was teasing him, ‘how'd you get here?' He said he drove, and I said 'you're not old enough to drive yet,' and he said ‘Ms. Ross, I'm 17 now,'" Ross said. "It's just touched all of us."

Charleston police say Lion parked in a West Ashley parking lot early Saturday morning. During a press conference on Tuesday Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen explained Lion did nothing to cause this shooting.

"He stopped at this location to sleep and was confronted by the criminal who ultimately took his life," Chief Mullen said.

The funeral Thursday comes just days after police released surveillance video that captured Lion's final moments. The man who fired the shots remains a mystery.

"A person like this doesn't care. They have no morals. They have no sense of justice, and we must bring this person to justice. That's what we owe the memory of this very fine young man," Mayor Joe Riley said during Tuesday's press conference.

The chief of police and mayor made a plea to the community Tuesday as they search for Lion's killer.

"Every lead that we get will be followed. We want to stop this person before they can cause this type of heartache to another family," Chief Mullen said.

Crime Stoppers officials say since the release of the video they've gotten more calls. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111.
