A man gets kicked out of the kids section of a Barnes and Noble for buying kid books for his grandkids. Is this discrimination?

You!

Picture this: you're standing in the children's section of a bookstore.
You've got money. You've got books to buy. And then an employee tells
you that you have to leave. The reason? The other customers are freaked
out that you're a man.

It's a story a grandfather from Arizona is screaming from the rooftops this week. Omar Amin says he went to Barnes and Noble to buy books for his grandkids, and he got kicked out because he was a man. And a store spokesperson is defending the action.

So who's right?

Hell, I'd never get to leave the house! Seriously, they're his grandkids!!!!!! This profiling thing has gone mad. Like my sainted Granny used to say,'you can't tell a book by it's cover.'

What? Please let there be more to this story than that. Please let there be some other reason for kicking him out. If not I see a huge lawsuit on the horizon for B&N.; There had to be a better way to have resolved this. How about watching the guy for awhile and see if he is doing anything other than shopping for books. If the story is true then every man should be outraged.

It would take a hell of a lot more than an apology to satisfy me. That was just ridiculous. I'm still mad about it and it didn't even happen to me or anyone I know. Ok, wait a minute, he is 73? Oh this just keeps getting better and better.

Sue the hell out of them without settling out of court (not just for the money but to make them think twice about ever letting this happen again without any proof and justifiable cause), then utilize the wonderful shopping market called the Internet. Cheaper and carries zero risk of harassment/discrimination from moron employees/other consumers.

Based on what is being reported (here and on the link) B&N; discriminated against the man. Personally, I'd go looking for another bookstore that would want my money after that! In fact, even though I'm a grandMOTHER, I think I may shop elsewhere in the future.

It sure sounds like to me it's discrimination. I think I'd be screaming it to all the local news agencies around that would listen. Then maybe press for a lawsuit to boot

Assuming that this is accurate, that the man in question did not do anything to suggest he was trying to harass or worse any children, this seems like a very bad move by the store. If they wanted to set aside a section of their store for children only, then a sign saying so should have been prominently posted and an employee should have been there to keep any adults from going in. I'm going to assume there was no sign and no "guard", so I can't find any reason that would justify the store's actions.

Yes, I am glad they did. I can sympathize with the store a bit. If customers keep complaining you don't want to lose them, but I still think it was a violation of his rights.

You bet it can Steve. Yep, word of mouth is the best form of advertising and if you piss off enough customers then it won't be long before they are out of business.

Seems kind of screwed up to me. Assuming that every older man in a children's bookstore is some kind of pedophile is kind of stupid.
