A Bit of Advice from "Sancho Panza"

Leasheryn/Lady Willpower 2012/08/21 00:38:07

"By no means," replied Sancho: "a good governor should have a broken leg and keep at home. Wouldn't it be a fine thing if people came to see him on business, foot-weary, and he's away in the woods enjoying himself? Sure, that way the government would go to hell altogether! By my faith, sir, hunting and amusements are more for lazybones than governors." quoted from "Don Quixote" by Cervantes

    It is always intriguing ..
how the great pieces of literature that in past years we've read and enjoyed
    (even as school assignments ..)
( and .. interestingly enough .. in the original language too I've read Don Quixote)

    Wise indeed ..
stay at home, fix the problems ..
then one can relax and enjoy ..
    UNTIL that happens ..
entertainment .. thoughts of vacations .. must be put aside ..

Love that story! Sancho was "really" the wise one, proverbs and all.

Sancho held the book together. He was the only one with both feet on the ground.

He was probably the smartest character in the book. I loved his proverbs.

We're like a nation of Sancho Panzas finding ourselves having to deal with delusional leaders obsessed with wind farms.

    Don Quixote and wind mills

Maybe all presidents should be banned from golf courses and basketball courts. I still don't know if Oblunder has any idea where the oval office is.

For most activities, yes. But government still has some core functions, valuable for the protection of individual rights. They are:

    Police

    Armed services

    Courts of law

Without these, the society would risk degenerating into feuding camps, ripe for invasion from without.

But when a government of men takes on *more* than these, it becomes abusive.

Thomas Jefferson was not an anarchist. He said, "To secure the rights [to life, liberty, and property], governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed[. W]henever any government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and institute a new government...."

But you can almost excuse people think (or wishing) he had been, when you see people defending socialism by placing police in the same category as "welfare."

He should be more widely read. It's a shame that kids today aren't being introduced to the classics any longer. Most of them have been banned because they are not PC. I'm reading as many of them as I can. Don Quixote is enjoyable, comical and thought provoking. It is so well interwoven a story that everyone can find something memorable about it.
