LONDON (Reuters) - A British bishop was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty after he helped his two young sons to perch on top of the chimney of their house to read a book as part of a school project.

Bishop Jonathan Blake, of the Open Episcopal Church, took pictures of his sons Nathan, eight, and Dominic, seven, while they sat on top of their two-storey home.

The children were calmly holding a book called "The Killer Underpants" for a school competition to find the most unusual place where a pupil had read a book.

After a neighbor alerted the police, the clergyman said he was arrested, driven away in a cage in the back of a van and kept overnight in a cell.

"I was taken out in handcuffs in front of the whole neighborhood while my children were in tears," the 52-year-old told Reuters on Thursday. "I was kept in the cells without any information about what was taking place from 7 p.m. until 10 a.m. the following morning.

"I am appalled and incredulous. I would never have imagined in a thousand years that this could have happened." The children were wearing safety harnesses and got on to the chimney via a flat roof at the back of the house in Welling, southeast London, he added.

Blake said he would make an official complaint and has already contacted London police chief Paul Stephenson and Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A member of the public reported that two small children had been left unattended on the roof of a house. A 52-year-old man was arrested in connection with the allegation and has since been released without charge."

We should all fall in line with the way they do things in other countries. Then maybe we can eventually drag ourselves down to their level.

Ya know, as a child, I was required by the Cub Scouts to climb a 25 foot tree, unassisted, witnessed by an adult, in order to satisfy one of the requirements for a merit badge. I guess my mom & dad were felons.

adult order satisfy requirements merit badge guess mom dad felons

People are ridiculous! First the neighbor for calling the police, without knowing if there was just cause, and then the police for arresting the man without asking any questions. What the hell is this world coming to?
This story could have very well taken place in America. The only difference is that child services would have shown up and removed the boys from the home. They would have been placed in foster care, pending a judge's ruling - however long that takes....

I'm surprised they didn't kill him. After all, he IS a christian, and therefore a member of the underclass.

couldn't they have spoken to him to find out what was going on? Or, maybe that is British "justice"...and why, thanks to the Founding Fathers, we have the presumption of innocence in this country...that is a pretty unique idea in this world.

Of course, this is outrageous. But government agencies responsible for child protection tend to over-compensate when they encounter possible child abuse or they are alerted to it because they more often than not fail to provide protection when it really is required due to lack of capacity.

I know exactly what you mean, with so many children being mistreated they have to investigate everyone reported.
