Death: Oct. 13, 1990 Sarasota Sarasota County Florida
, USA Television Anchor/Journalist. He was the host of television's first national daily news program. A radio announcer from a young age, he began his long association with CBS in 1942 as an announcer and later a news reporter. He served under Edward R. Murrow during the final days of World War II and stayed on as a correspondent in Paris helping to prepare for CBS's coverage of the Nuremberg trials. Edwards returned to the U.S. in 1946 and was chosen to anchor the "CBS World News Roundup." He soon became the first major radio news reporter to take up television duties. The "CBS Television News" began as a Saturday night broadcast, expanding to two nights in 1947 and becoming "Douglas Edwards and the News" on a nightly basis in August 1948. During his years at CBS, he also served as host of "Armstrong Circle Theater," "Masquerade Party," "FYI" and the radio show, "Answer Please." He also appeared as himself on the radio soap opera "Wendy Warren and the News" in which he would chat with the lead character about the news. Edwards was nominated for Emmy Awards in 1956, 1958 and 1961 and won the George Foster Peabody Award for distinguished achievement in television journalism for his coverage of the Andrea Doria sinking. After being replaced by Walter Cronkite as news anchor in 1962, he stayed on at CBS for another 26 years, working for the network's television and radio divisions. Edwards was posthumously elected to the Radio Hall of Fame in 2006. He died of cancer at age 73.

Do you remember (if you are old enough, or perhaps read about) when LBJ was lamenting over a broadcast of Walter Cronkite where he said the Viet Nam War needed to end? LBJ reportedly said, "If we lost Cronkite, we've lost the country".

Can you think of one single solitary newscaster who can make such a powerful claim today?

no one I can thank of
before Cronkite's broadcast the right could say only lwnj's opposed the War,Walter was in fact a right of center moderate,no commie, his viewpoint was what more and more moderate/centrists were saying that the war was unwinable, and ergo immoral

But where he stood out Cas, you never, ever knew "where he stood" because he was never anything but objective, fair and (ahem) balanced. The night he made that broadcast, my dad who NEVER missed his program was in awe. He had been at loggerheads with my college aged brother at the time over that other War of Choice and his tone mellowed a great deal afterwards. That's the kind of influence these guys had.
