Four eartquakes hit Baja California!? 6.9 is a big earthquake!
You!

A series of bad earthquakes struck Baja California, with the biggest being a 6.9. The series of California earthquakes started with a magnitude of 5.8, then the 6.9 earthquake, followed by a 5.0 and a 5.9 earthquake on the Richter scale. The earthquakes were centered 360 miles south of the CA border, but were felt as far us at San Diego, causing a scare. Offices in downtown San Diego were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Luckily, no Tsunami warning has been issued.

It was about time we had a real earthquake. Not that they're good or anything but we've been due for some real ones.

A lot of time shares just went to bargain rates, I'll bet, and those interested will find a lot of willing trades. Loma Prieta was 7.3 as I remember, and in my Foster City office, one could discern discrete sine waves in the the high voltage power lines crossing the bay. Very impressive. One of the few things CA does right is its enforcement of protective building codes regarding quakes. One should remember the Richter Scale is logrithmic, rather than simply scalar, so anything over a 5 will take your breath away. Whoopee ti-yi-oh!

one of the businesses that advertise with my business live 161 miles from Baja Ca. at Imperial Beach, I,m sure they felt it if it was felt in San Diego. I think though that the actual center of quake was some 360 mile from them.

It didn't really cause any damage in the San Diego area. It was in Baja California. No tsunami or anything. They felt it in Phoenix and Tucson also.

I've lived with earthquakes my entire life... you shake for a while and then it's over. I live in fear of fire devastation more often... Not for my life, but for the lives of the animals and the beauty where I live, and of course, my home.

That's so hard. We had hurricane Ike blow through this area - specifically where I live, there were just lots of trees down, but it just completely devistated this area. Like after your fire, the area looked like a war zone. The exit going to my sister's house was the last exit anyone could take - highway was closed after that for over a week. We were all very fortunate - no one was hurt. So very sorry to hear about your mom's loss...hope things are better for her now.

Yes, the insurance company was actually very good to her (there are some horror stories from others that had different insurance carriers, though). My mom was able to get into a better house, next to a golf course. She had a lot of content insurance, and bought all new furniture, dishes, etc... Plus, she gave me $30,000 of the money. But, believe me, it was NOT worth it!! She lost everything... every photograph she had collected for 69 years, my dad and her's wedding rings (my mom is widowed from my dad), her parents wedding rings, her dad and brother's purple star from service in the military, many sentimental things that I made her as a child - and as an adult, every thing that meant anything about my brother (who died @ 16 years old). 69 years of her life... Gone. Just imagine how that would feel. My heart broke for her. We found out on Larry King on CNN when we were evacuated from the area... they mentioned her little street... she was speechless. She had lived in this area for exactly one year, to be near me and my kids. Very, very sad. Fire is a huge issue for many of us that live in beautiful areas of Southern California. We typically have 2 week evacuations... that is not unusual. The fire that my mom lost her house in burned 930 other homes... and it was ars...

I am so glad to hear that in your situation, nobody was hurt. (We were unharmed physically, as well). Did your homes survive?

We were very fortunate. My niece lives on a canal, and she lost the stuff downstairs - her hot tube floated on off to somewhere - never to be found again. My sister only lost part of her fence.
It took quite a while for some to get insurance, but everyone has pitched in and there has been a lot of re-building. A friend who lives in a very affluent area in a 3 story house lost every thing on 2 floors, and lost the down stairs of his store. Many people, like your mom, lost everything. Of all the re-buliding, the very best news is that a treaching medical hospital that has an outstanding triage unit, has opened back
up, just in the past few days. Originally, it was going to be closed permanently, but the state stepped in and re-vived it. Jobs were saved and it's badly needed in the area since there are a lot of chemical plants, and the fear was if there was some kind of accident, then awful lot of lives would be saved.

I'm glad to hear it worked out, for the most part. Our homeowners insurance is off the chart here where I live. Our fires seem to happen in October and November, during the Santa Ana winds. But, we have no crime! We have to remain grateful, right?!

Insurance has shot up here, too. August/Sept are the height of hurricane season. So far, so good.

May not have the physical memories, but the memories of the heart can never be taken away.

    Have a great evening.

Yes, I have only lived in Southern California... this area owns my heart and soul. I'm cool with earthquakes... no biggie. But the fires are devastating... I live in a vacation resort town. It's beautiful, crime-free, and a wonderful place to raise a family. But, I do have to worry about fire. It's a trade-off. I won't leave California, though... unless for love.
