"I never believed that I nor anyone else needs a title to do this, to make a difference," she said. "I'm determined to take the right path for Alaska, even though it is unconventional and it's not so comfortable."
One factor she cited was the media and political attacks on her, and she suggested that her reason for quitting abruptly was to allow the state to move forward under Parnell without distraction, calling this the "right path for Alaska."
"For my state and for my family to progress ... I will not seek re-election as governor," she said, voicing confidence that her successor would "continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success."

There is not one shred of evidence (well, except in the minds of some few loons dedicated to hating her into her grave. ) that her actions were based on anything other than what she said she was doing and why.

I read a lot of conservative and liberal spin explaining the reason Saran Palin resigned as Governor of Alaska. Most of them say she said it was because of all the lawsuits being thrown at her and how she didn't want to cost the taxpayers of Alaska so much money defending them. That's half true.
The lawsuits were definitely the reason, but be assured, Sarah was only thinking of herself. The taxpayers had nothing to do with it. There is a law in Alaska that states that the Governor is responsible to personally pay his/her own legal fees. State funds cannot be used for the Governor's defense costs in any manner. The taxpayers of Alaska do not participate in the Governor's legal defense expenditures. She apparently did not realize this when she took office.
The Alaska Governor's annual salary is $125,000. Sarah and Todd had to pay out over $500,000 of their own money within 8 months in defense of 15 separate ethics complaints because of the Alaska stipulation that the Governor is required to pay his/her own legal fees. Had she not resigned, The Palin Family was looking at spending at least another $1,000,000 in defense costs for other active complaints through the remainder o...

Had she not resigned, The Palin Family was looking at spending at least another $1,000,000 in defense costs for other active complaints through the remainder of her term.
When she learned she had to pay for her own defense costs for these ethics complaints, she put up a website called "thealaskafundtrust.com" for the purposes of soliciting donations from citizens to pay her legal fees for her while she was still Governor. This in and of itself constituted yet ANOTHER ethics violation and she was ordered to take it down.

Now faced with mounting defense costs and no legal means of funding them, she had no choice but to resign and pursue what she called her 'higher calling.'
After resigning, Sarah's 'higher calling' came in the form of a contract in an undisclosed dollar amount with Fox (estimated at $1,000,000 plus) as well as private speaking engagements which pay in the neighborhood of $50K each (Possibly more - these engagements can pay up to $300,000 each, which is what Bill Clinton gets for one.) Then of course there is her $5,000,000 book deal and her reality TV show which quickly topped her income at over $12,000,000 by mid 2010.
Nearly a year after resignation, Sara was found in violation of the Alaska Ethics Code by The Alaska Personnel Board for her 'Alaska Fund Trust' website and was forced to return $386,000 in contributions.

She now maintains a site called "The Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund" where she continues to solicit donations for her legal costs, even though she is now making somewhere in excess of $20,000,000 per year. Items that I've stated here are confirmed on that site.

She holds no public office and is not a civil servant of any kind. She is a millionaire panhandler coercing people to make donations to a reality TV show host. There is a disclaimer on the 'donation' page of her site that states: "Donations made to The Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund are not tax-deductible."
I also think it was important to step down to stave off the legal hassles she was facing and look how that turned out.
