All knives should be banned and food should be sold in bite sized pieces cut up by fully trained and licensed professionals.

I lived in China during 2010 and 2011 and it was absolutely horrific. It started in Japan with some horrifying mass school stabbings.
As these are emulated by mentally unstable people it then started in China. China had not fully understood you can't publicize these things and feature the killers - so copycat crimes ensued.
One after the other after the other. It seems to me there were actually 3 of these in a single week totally something like 30 children stabbed to death.

    I've actually lost track.
Not known to most Westerners is the shockingly high number of knife-murders in China (granted they have a massive population) but we'd see at least 1 of these 'crazed public stabbings' a month.
Sometimes just randomly running about stabbing 'anyone' randomly. And too often you'd just have a guy stab his wife/girlfriend to death (say on her way home from work).
I mean its just alarming the regularity of this.
Now, a little personal story here but I had BEGGED some media people there to PLEASE STOP featuring these 'school stabbers'.
In the ultimate irony I was actually encouraging Chinese to 'censor' something for a GOOD reason.
Eventually they did stop glorifying and reporting the names and the 'school stabbings' seemed to go away.
Now I'm horrified this is happening again :(

I had no idea that China had so many knife assaults. I worry about copycat attacks. One unstable person seeing all the attention that the media gives to tragic events, and they will want the same attention, so the commit a bigger tragedy than the one they are copying.

Unfortunately this is what happened in Japan when the 1st 'mass school knifing' happened they made it a 24/7 news cycle that turned the disgruntled janitor/psycho into a massive 'pop icon'.
Not long after another psycho did a 'copy-cat' in another Japanese kindergarten.
This seemed to be what 'copy-cat' instigated the Chinese version.
He was also 'Aggrandized' with his face, name, story and his notorious crimes run 24/7 as a national 'villain'.
They made such a deal of his execution and the NEXT DAY it happened again - obviously a copy-cat imitator wanted the same national infamy.

Yeah its really disturbing the stabbings in Mainland China. The latest thing (not a good sign) is how many people are now stabbing each other in 'common street arguments'. Little stuff like cutting in line gets you a quick shoulder stab now.
Some say its the increasing pressures of an expanding volatile Chinese society?

Obviously the knife possessed this poor innocent man and made him (edit) put 4 in intensive care (/edit).

F*cked up story though; those poor kids that would have been traumatic.

well with death you dont hurt anymore, only those around you do....The families of the slashed babies in China, at least have the chance to hold their children and see them grow up

The mental problems those children are probably going to endure after an experience like that would be horrible to think of.

Many many people go thru traumas that are worse as children, but they are at least alive and with their families. Their families will have them around to hold and hug and celebrate life with.
Im in no way condoning what the lunatic did, only as a mother who would (given a choice between a knife wound and a dead body) choose to have her children around her . over a memory every time.

No worries :) as you say, easy to come up with solutions in retrospect; but to put forward a change one must first question the risks. And to me, attempting to disarm america poses a far greater risk then another 1000 of these incidents considering what the potential ramifications of that might be.
  • Nestofa... realist 2012/12/17 13:21:33

I disagree, without reservation, Disarming the populace wont happen.
But 1000 incidents of children being slaughtered is something I dont wish to be a part of in any way.
However, I doubt we will agree if we go any further, I do not wish to get bogged down in that right now. Be well

No worries :) many here in Australia think disarming will happen; there is allot of pressure on the US at the moment. I hope they realize the constitution is somewhat more important then the unpredictable behaviors of the mentally unwell. Peace to you.

The reality is that it is far easier to pull a trigger than to knife someone: a gun can be fired with deadly accuracy from a distance, so pulling the trigger can be a completely impersonal action. Killing or maiming someone with a knife, on the other hand, is a very personal action because it requires immediate proximity, the need to give the knife a good twist once it has pierced the body, bloody hands and clothes, the smell of blood and, perhaps, the feel of a dying body writhing on the end of the blade.

In addition, the number of people a knife-wielding maniac might kill or injure would normally be far lower than the number a crazed gunman might take out.

    Nope.
Sorry but you are wrong about this. I would have probably agreed with you 20 years ago because its seems like 'gun' is super loud and in the movies people fall instantly dead from any distance.
But I worked in a prison for about 6 years. Contrary to more movies and what you may suppose - inmates DO NOT need a gun or give a damn about 'smuggling in a gun' because knives are far more effective.
Guns are shockingly loud. In close quarters you need to get some distance and are you ready for something surprising?
In close quarters (a jail cell or a classroom maybe) guns are often surprisingly INEFFECTIVE because bullets have a habit of being extremely small, going directly through people or bouncing off bones etc.
Knives are VERY EFFECTIVE if the goal is actual murder in a close quarter situation. and nearly instantaneous.
They are also so quiet (in one situation) that a rival passed an enemy - in a split second pierced his kidney so fast and so quickly that the VICTIM barely noticed. Nor did anyone else! In fact, the would-be killer was long long gone (no alarms, nobody warning anything) and a crowd was trying to figure out if he was 'sick' or 'had a cramp'.

And nope - these horrifying knife attacks in China ha...

And nope - these horrifying knife attacks in China have been taking out just as many people as 'shooters' in the USA. 6, 12 and I believe one was 25 dead.

Sorry but knives are absolutely DEADLY.. its almost GOOD that many people are like yourself and think knives are somehow 'ineffective' and that they need a gun. We really want people to keep believing that because if they understood knives are as deadly (or worse) they might use them more :(

*btw: 'knife crime' shot up in the UK over the last few years (about 10 years ago or so they basically banned any and all firearms). It turns out 'Knife Violence' is indeed very effective as far as injury/death goes in common gang warfare too.

No, but the British Commonwealtj requires a permit for knives and restricts many. But that would never happen here.
