A push to spread the gospel about the 2010 Census this Christmas is stoking controversy with a campaign that links the government count to events surrounding the birth of Jesus. The National Association of Latino Elected Officials is leading the distribution to churches and clergy of thousands of posters that depict the arrival of Joseph and a pregnant Mary in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago...
It is promoting the Census, used to help allocate $400 billion a year in federal dollars, redraw state and local political districts and determine the number of seats each state gets in Congress.

kahless 2009/12/21 23:23:31Other...+2There is nothing written in the constitution except that the feds cannot dictate what religion you will worship....having said that, how can you seperate church and state...thou shall not kill, steal, commit adultry, etc.....seems that the govt has taken the ten commandments out of their entire lives not just their office in govt. You cannot govern without the help of god, you throw god out all you have is what we have now....a senate and congress who could care less about what you think. They are going to pass a bill that authorizes the killing of babies (ABORTION) and you and I are going to pay for it, literally. Not one democratic senator stood up for the lives of the unborn except Nelson and as soon as they met his price he turned out to have feet of clay, he was bought......God help them and the lives they are about to terminate.

Luke 2
1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) 5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
I mean really, it's being given to CHURCHES...not distributed door to door to people of varying religions. And Mary and Joseph traveled because of the census, so the linking up is understandable especially if it's going to be distributed to only churches. I'm not very religious, but I do like common sense. Getting your knickers in a twist over this is pretty much a waste of time and effort.
Something to keep in mind is that most Latinos are Catholic and very proud of their religion.
The government is not telling people what to believe- its all about advertising and campaigning. Quite frankly, maybe the people who designed the poster knew it would attract attention by saying "Jesus" so their strategy is working.
Almost all of our laws, too, have something to do with the Bible... the 10 commandments for example: thou shall not kill, steal, etc. If you take religion out of government you'll have NOTHING. We all might as well resort back to living in caves. Almost everything religion is in someway connected with the government. There would be no morals lef tin the world! You take that away, we have everything that we're working hard to stop*
*of course our current government isn't very much different than what I just described. Abortion anyone...?
it says the government shall not abrige the right to religion or free speech.
someone smart want to tell me what religion the country was founded on from the mayflower on. guess that sums it up.
the founder did not want a government run church, they didn't say religion and government counld work together reserch the founders quotes they were for religion and office. as a matter or fact 52 out of 55 serverd in their churches.
Oh I had to edit my comment when I realized it was the picture I was supposed to be addressing. Might not be the best way to get non-Christians to respond to the census, so it is probably wrong for its likelihood of producing inaccurate (and thus unfair) results.
"if you don't like hearing about the birth of christ then don't celebrate christmas"
Are you capable of even seeing the hypocricy of what you have written here? How do you justify telling people what to do one mere sentence after having appealed to people's sense of freedom?
