$20 Per Gallon

The book was written by Christopher Steiner, a staff writer for Forbes magazine. If this is our future, then we must begin to abandon fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy sources, and we must invest in mass transit including an updated national railway system. Our energy world is changing; we should be prepared for it. [Image source: http://www.thereisnofutureinoil.com/]
From the inside flap:
In the not-too-distant future -- whether we like it or not -- the price of gasoline will begin a rise that will continue for decades. It will increase so much, in fact, that many aspects of our everyday life will be dramatically altered -- and altered in ways that most of us wouldn't necessarily anticipate.
For example, can you envision a future where we travel by train, not by plane? A future without garbage trucks? One where today's distant suburbs gradually become ghost towns? Where outsourced jobs come back to America? Where Wal-Mart goes out of business? And the same for Disney World? A future where sushi disappears from most places? A future with local produce rather than homogenized megafarm vegetables?
Ultimately, this phenomenon [rising gas prices] will make our world simpler...safer...more family-friendly...and, in general, feature a healthier way of living.
From the author's note
:
Most of us can agree, as the facts and considerable bounty of research show, that oil is a finite resource that we use at a gluttonous pace. What will life look like with gas that costs $8 per gallon? $10 per gallon? $18 per gallon?
