In 1984, I joined a chapter of Toastmasters International. As an introductory exercise, someone asked me: "In one minute, pretend that you're the Minister of Agriculture, having to explain recent crop shortages."

My reply: "You misunderstand. There is no crop shortage. It's just that you've all been eating too much, and now you're going to lose a little weight!"

Interesting read; decidedly from a leftist point of view of life and times and as such, has more opinion than fact. But interesting at any rate.

I think there is truth on both sides, When we stop allowing them to divide us with left and right we will settle in the middle and all will benifit

Amen to that. The divisive so rampant in politics today benefits no one but the politicians.

Yes, that's what I've noticed. It doesn't seem to matter. They all lie and all look after their OWN interests above those of the people.

When they bailed out the bankers instead of helping the people who were loosing their homes the country lost their soul

Yes. Amen to that, Beccy. They enriched the wealthy and instead of keeping them to the promise of helping those who were in danger of losing their homes, they let the banks take the money and NOT use it to help.

I brought my house in 2005 and own double of what it is worth because it distroyed the market in my city. I talked to a lawyer about the situation. He told me he was in the same position I am in. He said he will stay until he is ready to move on and just walk away. There is nothing else we can do.

I am so sorry. I bought my house when prices were on the way down. It's appraised at a little more than I paid, but in this market, that isn't bad. I am so grateful to have a house I can afford to live in. I have a cousin who is living with me right now because she was not only downsized from her job of more than 20 years, there are problems with her house, as well. I doubly grateful that I can afford to help her. She's good company.

Yes, she has a job, but it's located over 200 miles from her house and other one. I'm happy that I can help with a place for her to live.

Why do people keep harping about "Two Wars"?
Our troops had ceased combat operations in Iraq before Bush left office and were camped outside the cities in a baby-sitting role. The new Iraqi Army and Police were running the show.
Bush left the folder on the desk, outlining the exit plan already signed with Iraq.

The cost for both Iraq & Afghanistan pales in comparison with Vietnam & WW II, both in lives & dollars. In 2012 dollars, WW II cost over $4 Trillion for 3-1/2 years, about a 1/2 million lives and untold number injured.
Vietnam was $850 Billion from 1965-1975, (although it began on '61) 68,000 lives + injured.
Iraq & Afghanistan combined, averaged $100 Billion per year since 2001.

We had body counts on the nightly news in the 60's & 70's.

We didn't have body counts for Iraq and Afghanistan because it was policy not to have them. I think that it wasn't necessarily a good thing. We conveniently 'forget' that people are losing their lives.

I, for one, feel it is very wrong that they keep us in the dark. I also think they're cooking the books on costs more than they're letting us know. I suspect that all the private contractors are billing in such a way as it is not going as a direct war expense.

Yes and all the stuff that was contracted for and never delivered, or was delivered sub-standard. My daughter's husband was in both Iraq and Afghanistan. You hear the stories about Iraq, but he says that was a picnic in the park compared to Afghanistan.
