Our troops had ceased combat operations in Iraq before Bush left office and were camped outside the cities in a baby-sitting role. The new Iraqi Army and Police were running the show.
Bush left the folder on the desk, outlining the exit plan already signed with Iraq.
The cost for both Iraq & Afghanistan pales in comparison with Vietnam & WW II, both in lives & dollars. In 2012 dollars, WW II cost over $4 Trillion for 3-1/2 years, about a 1/2 million lives and untold number injured.
Vietnam was $850 Billion from 1965-1975, (although it began on '61) 68,000 lives + injured.
Iraq & Afghanistan combined, averaged $100 Billion per year since 2001.
We had body counts on the nightly news in the 60's & 70's.
