10 Frightening Things That Happen at Conservative Christian Schools That May Be Funded With Your Tax Dollars

School vouchers have long been a pet cause of Christian school advocates who want to shore up profits and increase their ranks. In 2002, the United States Supreme Court ruled that public funds designated for private school tuition were not an infringement on church/state separation. That gave private Christian school advocates a green light to promote vouchers for themselves.

Though vouchers have become legal in some states, like Ohio, others, like North Carolina, are still holding out. Either way, Christian school advocates show no signs of slowing down their efforts. One reason vouchers remain so contested is that they sometimes fund activities in private Christian schools that many American taxpayers would not want to support. Here are 10 strange things that happen at Christian schools that may give you pause next time vouchers are debated in your state:

1. Inflammatory anti-choice rhetoric - “I remember my English teacher passing around shocking photographs of dismembered babies. That was where I learned about abortion.”

2. Hands-on anti-choice activism - Some Christian schools even schedule field trips in which students are transported to an abortion clinic for a protest.

3. Christian sex-ed - If that weren’t groan-worthy enough, many abstinence-only programs teach objectively false information. Heritage Keepers notably claims that condom use results in pregnancy one in seven times.

4. Intolerance - In other words, public schools would now be required to use school curriculums that whitewash Christians and demonize Muslims. Though relatively new to public education, Islamophobia has long run rampant at Christian schools.

5. Punishment by gender - Teachers in Christian schools sometimes stereotype boys as more rambunctious and rebellious than girls. In practice, this means that boys are often the targets of harsher corporal punishment.

6. Pregnancy expulsions and firings - Punishing girls who have sex also extends to pregnancy.

7. Revisionist evangelical history classes - The racist history of the United States is usually whitewashed or romanticized in Christian school curriculum.

8. Creationism-only - creationism cannot in any way be science

9. Ridiculous dress codes, mostly for girls - The idea that modest dress among girls tempers teen hormones is magical thinking, but it has never gone out of fashion at Christian schools.

10. Proms without dancing - But in 2009, an Ohio student was suspended from his Christian school for attending a public school prom.

Voucher exceptions do not make public schools out of private schools as is implied in point number 4. Private Schools can teach morality in any manner they believe appropriate. If they choose to teach that abortion is a sin they have the Constitutionally guaranteed right to do so. If they choose to require a specific dress code, not allow dancing, teach creationism etc. they have the right to do so.

Conjecture with no basis in fact, great job! If Christian schools are so terrible why are they kicking the crap out of public schools in science and math test scores. Kind of makes your article look ridiculous, but then again the ignorant always look ridiculous.

Liberals are against the voucher program because it allows students that excel to attend better schools leaving them to face the music of their own dismal test scores. The educate to elevate program was a massive bust so now it's drag the achievers down so they can feel better about themselves.

The issue is tax payers are also paying for incompetent schools, how about we end tax payer funding of education and solve the issue once and for all.

Hahahahahahahaha............the alleged Christian brainwashing isn't anything compared to the soap job CNN, MSN, and NBC hand out daily to the uneducated liberals that can't pass 4th grade reading test because at 10 years old they don't know what a camel is.

I'm sorry you feel that education is a role for government to confiscate and redistribute to. Anyone serious about educating there child cannot rely on government to facilitate that goal.
