Homeownership in the U.S., especially new homeownership, can provide household stability and a financial investment for happy homeowners. As a major life event, buying a house and moving are also stressful milestones that can involve challenges, additional expenses, or feeling “house rich and cash poor” when the deal is done. In fact, home prices have risen significantly since December 2020, when the median home sales price, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was $335,900. The median sales price increased to $449,000 as of May 2022.

To better understand the current homebuying and moving experience, U.S. News used Pollfish to survey 2,000 American homeowners who purchased their first home in either 2021 or 2022. We asked respondents (all 18 and older) about what prompted their decision to buy a house, their moving experience, and the most stressful aspects of new homeownership.
