The Oakland riots were sparked after an unarmed civilian, Oscar Grant was fatally shot in the back by BART officer Johannes Mehserle in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009. The Oakland, California officer claims that the shooting was accidental, and that he had meant to use his Taser on Oscar Grant, who was resisting arrest on a subway train.
