SodaHead Celebrates Green Week

MySpace the Next Friendster: Will the social networking site lose its dominance?

Fef August 14, 2008 06:13:06

I didn't make this up. I have a strong loyalty to MySpace. But I read an article that paints a gloomy picture picture for MySpace's future:
"Facebook’s visitor growth mushroomed by 153%, compared to a paltry 3% annual growth for what was once acknowledged as its top competitor, MySpace."

MySpace will continue its dominance
MySpace "Friendstered" and will fade out

I've used Myspace for about 3 years. I do still use it but only to keep contact with friends. Otherwise, I use Sodahead most of the time.

MySpace "Friendstered" and will fade out

People know there are choices and peoples loyalty is shallow at best.
Come on, this is America, we divorce a spouse for a 'fresh start,' hurting children we love, what chance does an internet site have?

You make a good point. Though, people get attached to all their data like an email account and don't want to have fresh start with that... or do they? I guess you have a lot more data attached to a spouse and still some leave for selfish reasons.

MySpace "Friendstered" and will fade out

If they dont fix all the errors that keep happening they will, in the past 8 months have had nothing but trouble with my myspace accounts & its a real shame coz i like myspace a lot as it allows you to express your self quite freely within reason. I hope they manage to sort it coz if they dont then i can see many people leaving due to this coz i havent been using it as much as a result of all the hassle ive had : (

I'm not really sure it will fade out...I think young people will continue to participate on MySpace. Yes some people will leave, but there will always be people that come. I think that happens with most of these type of sites.

MySpace does have a gazillion users. It can afford to lose a few as long as it keeps growing with new ones.

I think that facebook definitely has a place, but I for one am entrenched in MySpace and here at SodaHead and I don't have the time to get involved in another networking site. FB may get a lions share of new market growth, MS has a base market and will maintain a slow growth as long as they keep the site fresh. If they lose their competitive edge and stagnate, then MS will fade out. The problem with being the leader is that their is always someone to take your place if you don't remain in top form.

    MySpace will continue its dominance

Myspace is myspace and it will never "fade out."
its email to the hundredth power!

the only reason facebook grew is because a lot of myspacers were curious about how facebook grows.
about a year ago, all my friends started getting a facebook account, but cuz other people were getting it. and i followed lol.
i go on there like once a week, and so does everyone else i know, except for a few people.
so myspace will continue to grow.

i think that article was looking at the number of "your network" people thing on your homepage. and it says something like 240 million, and about a year ago it was at like 220 million i think, not realizing that myspace changed that thing. now it just shows the number of people that tom is friends with. and not realizing that the number of accounts is actually at well 400 million. which would mean that myspace grew from 220 million to 400 million in one year, which would mean that it grew like 80%???

    i love myspace. ha
    thank you fef!!!

    I really don't know.

I use both MySpace and Facebook ~ but for 2 very different reasons: I keep in touch with my friends through Facebook; and I use MySpace for collecting music/bands that I would otherwise have never heard on the airwaves; and indulging in my fantasies, desires and other 'underground' debauchery..

Maybe it won't so much as die out, but will go to a particular user group..

That, or the marketing just isn't working as well as it used to be.

A lot of people seem to have become quite disillusioned with MySpace as well, for reasons that I don't know..
