MySpace bans Photobucket: Who Will Get Hurt More?

Sam April 13, 2007 00:27:59

The popular online hangout MySpace has blocked parts of Photobucket, complaining that the Web hosting service has been encouraging users to incorporate an ad-supported slideshow into their MySpace personal profile pages.

MySpace didn't ban Photobucket completely. Things will work out in the end. PB will suffer barely in the shortrun, but MySpace will suffer long term because people believe MySpace and Murdoch banned PB for no apparent reason.

The complicated reasons behind the ban did not get through to the people to whom it matters most -- PB/MySpace users. Users already have suspicions about MySpace under Fox.

A web site has the right to make it's own rules.

If people stop using MySpace...it'd be the most harmful thing to MySpace..

Photobucket has a lot of business from MySpace, but not ALL.

It is a lot easier to move to a new social network than it is to move all of those uploaded videos, slideshows, remixes flash games and images to a new host (provided you can even find one that will hold all those in one place). I can set up a profile in minutes provided I have my media handy.

I am hoping things will work out OK for all. :)

Maybe I will just camp here at Sodahead.

    Photobucket

It seems as though people have a lot more invested in their myspace accounts then they do in their photobucket videos. Also, the photobucket video player pales in comparison to youtube's and myspace's. Since myspace only blocked the video aspect of photobucket I think most people will take the easy route and just change video services vs the alternative which is to switch social networking sites and then try to get there thousand and one friends to switch too.

However, if myspace starts blocking more and more big name widget venders, then we might start seeing the mass exodus that many have predicted over and over again.

They are alienating their user base by indirectly informing them that if we can't make money on the widgets that are placed on our site, our users will not be allowed to use those widgets. We call that corporate sell-out and users never identify with that.

    Both Will Suffer Equally

The internet needs no borders or sensorship. Myspace and Photobucket both need each other. Not like myspace will suffer too much without photobucket, but it sends the wrong message and may mean more sensorship ahead. users won't like it.
