Yankees christen new stadium with World Series win and are considered best American sports team ever!

- The ghosts may have been abandoned across the street, where the House that Ruth Built is awaiting the imminent arrival of the wrecker’s ball. But from old to new, the New York Yankees left no doubt in the House that George Built that their championship tradition runs as straight and true as a pinstripe.

The Yankees won their 27th World Series title and first in the new Yankee Stadium by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 Wednesday night to take the 105th World Series in six games.

They christened their new $1.5 billion home in the same style as the original back in 1923, when the heroes were a left-handed slugger named Babe Ruth and a left-handed pitcher named Herb Pennock. Ruth hit three home runs, including one in the World Series clincher, and Pennock won twice, including the finale.

Eighty-six years later, only the names changed. Left-handed slugger Hideki Matsui(notes), in possibly his last game in a Yankee uniform, tied a Series record by driving in six runs and hit his third home run of the Series, a two-run blast in the second that was the Yankees’ first shot across the bow against Phillies starter Pedro Martinez.

Matsui, whose aching knees limited him to a pinch-hitting role in the three games in Philadelphia, had hit a tie-breaking home run off Martinez in the Yankees’ Game 2 win and demonstrated anew that if Martinez wanted to discuss his ancestry, his Yankee “daddy” was the venerable Japanese star.... How proud. George Steinbrenner bought another one. Baseball needs a cap like in football.

all the comments about "bought games" did you stop to think thats what american government is like? the team with the most wins the most. and if your team had money they would do the same things so dont go off on "sports morals"

The credit is due to the "chemistry" that the players developed with Girardi's leadership. You can assemble an All-Star team but if they lack comraderie and chemistry they will not win. Give credit to Girardi. Give credit to A-rod; he's a changed man, totally unselfish and team oriented based on comments I've seen. Sabathia, Burnett, Texeira are getting in line and leaving their egos at the door for the sake of the TEAM. Truly amazing to watch a group of guys having fun and playing loose. And of course the glue that held it all together was the CORE 4 from all those 90's championship teams: Jeter, Pettitte, Posada and the incomparable Rivera. All of them contributed greatly again this post season. Reminiscent of the late 90's. GO YANKS.............

No way they are the best team ever. Best team ever were the 1927 Yankees. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, or the 1939 Yankees or the 1907 Cubs, come one...

Not to mention the Yankees just capitalized off of the fact that the batting line-up on the Phillies fell to pieces AND that Martinez threw like a AA pitcher last night.

I agree. That was the obscure point I was originally trying to make. the NY Yankees have "bought" more championships than any other team in history so I guess they have that going for them. I hate them; my father hated them and I'm sure at least one more generation in my family will hate them as well. Maybe it's because sports channels act like we should just all love them. Why? can't we make up our own minds who to like and who to dislike?

Some semblance of parity would make baseball great. That is why the 2003 Series was the sweetest ever. The Marlins kicking the shit out of the Yankees with their $54 million payroll against Steinbrenner's $164 million payroll.

sweetest marlins kicking shit yankees 54 payroll steinbrenners 164 payroll

I agree. There is no suspense if it's the same teams that win year after year. I used to be a NE Patriots fan until they became periennal favs to win every year. Then the super bowl just became the super blow.
