Stephen Curry NBA Draft: Should NCAA athletes be forced to graduate?

Mr. T April 23, 2009 19:21:20

Stephen Curry of Davidson has decided to skip his senior year of college to take his game to the NBA. Curry is the nations leading scorer in NCAA basketball. However, Curry has decided that he would rather take his chances in the NBA draft than graduating from Davidson. Stephen Curry's father, the NBA sharpshooter, Dell Curry, has been at the side of his son, supporting his decision. With an average of 28.6 points a game, with some games scoring over 40, Curry said he is ready for the NBA draft.

Should college athletes be forced to graduate before entering the major leagues?

No. If Stephen Curry is ready for the NBA draft, let him go.

If a player is talented enough to be drafted then he should be allowed to do so. If a brilliant mathematician had completed his first year of college and was asked to join NASA would anyone mind or think it was wrong?

Stephen can get his degree during the off season or after he retires from the NBA.

Does it really matter?? If the NBA is going to draft him, I don't think they really give a damn whether, or not he's got a college degree. I don't like the sport, so I really don't care anyways.

Curry put Davidson on the map. His great talent did more taking his team to the elite 8 than any recruiting would ever do. He should go now while his stock is up. One injury and he loses that chance for the rest of his life. Sure a degree is great. How long will it take him with a bachelors degree to make 10 million. He will get that a year for at least 4 years. Now do you really want me to believe if it was you you would stay in school?

Yes his skill in sports may get him where he wants to be but what will he have to fall back on if all else fails i know with the money he can have anything he wants but leaving school and going to college he has no learning skills to keep his fortune moving in the right direction

I think Stephen Curry is old enough to make decisions for himself, he does not need to have everyone on his back to force him to graduate.
If he wants to go ahead into NBA draft, then let him go, and if he wants to graduate, encourage him to do so. If he graduated with a degree, it may benefit him later on in life.

Yes, college athletes, like Curry, should be forced to graduate before going to the NBA.

It would have to be a contractual agreement between the NCAA and the NBA, to enforce the requirement. Even the NJ State Police require a B.A/ B.S degree. Sure, its much diff. work, but all jobs have updated requirements in 2009.

No. If Stephen Curry is ready for the NBA draft, let him go.

There's no ethical way to force players to graduate. If there are stricter terms on entrance to the NBA, many players have made it clear they would avoid college, go play for good money in a foreign league for the minimum time until NBA eligibility, then go to the NBA. It would be worthless to force people to do something they are adverse to.

I understand the whole "more well rounded" issue that colleges push, but in reality it's just a way for the colleges to get big money out of free players. Of course they don't want that going away anytime soon.

I think he or anyone shouldn't be forced into graduation but it would be to their benefit when someday he may not be able to play basketball.

If he can make a living in the NBA more power to him. A college degree is not needed by everyone. Plumbers, electricians and a host of other trades are needed and people who can work or start business in these trades will only help the economy. Same thing with sports. They create jobs and that will always help the economy.

Yes, college athletes, like Curry, should be forced to graduate before going to the NBA.

My reason for saying yes is that these young athletes are making descions that may impact them for life. You can only play basketball for so long, eventually you retire and what if you don't have anything to fall back on? At least they should have an associates degree in some field they can fall back on. Many are so naive that they blow through all their money and have nothing to show for it. It is a sad situation.

Curry will either be a bust in the NBA, or maybe as good as a John Stockton. If players like Labron, Kevin Garnett, and McGrady can go pro without college then why not let Curry forego his senior year.

For the simple fact he is getting a free ride. He should have to actually earn something for it. Beyond playing some dumba** game.

I don't even think they should be forced to go to college. If they are good enough to play in the NBA after high school, I say let them.
Stephen Curry is good enough to play in the NBA right now.
