Here's the deal...I am good friends with a very important American family in Olympic track and field...they're well loved, and well respected...I've talked about this with them, and they have given an honest opinion:
Money and Stress.
You see, athletes stand to make a LOT of money if they win. From endorsements, from prize money, and so on...because of this, they want to be the best. So, they start doping. Maybe just to get a little further, then to keep going. It's addiction of another sort. They often break under the stress, and often turn to other drugs...

Sadly, many grew up in slums and ghetto areas where the only ways to become affluent were to become a professional athlete or deal in drugs. As they went through school, excelling in sports they were always exposed to the "cool" classmates who weren't the super-athletes and chose the drug trade for their income and acceptance. Some got into it from liking the drug experience, others for fear of reprisal from gang members who controlled the local drug trade. There are, as I said, two tickets only out of the ghetto; unfortunately, some chose both!I think Olympic athletes take drugs because...
Because they work, but I don't think the white lady is one of the performance enhancing drugs commonly used. My guess is he like horse and used it until it sucked his bank account dry, sucked his soul dry and sucked his character dry. Now he gets to sit in prison for 9 years. I doubt the time in the joint will do him much good but society loves it.I think Olympic athletes take drugs because...
