Is the UFC a real sport?

Could the best pound-for-pound fighter in the old combat sport (boxing) handle a champion in the new combat sport (UFC)?

"UFC's champions can't handle boxing. That's why they are in UFC." Mayweather said Tuesday from Las Vegas during a break in training. "Put one of our guys in UFC and he'd be the champion. Any good fighter, he'd straight knock them out."

Dana White, a one-time boxer and boxing instructor and current UFC president, laughs at that.

"Boxers couldn't become mixed martial artists. That's why they're boxers," White countered Wednesday from England where UFC has an event Saturday. "They are one trick ponies. Our guys can do everything. They can box, they can kick box, they can wrestle and do jiu-jitsu. They are much better athletes than boxers."

Mayweather may be right, but he'd have to be. Any boxer stepping into the UFC octagon would have to knock his opponent out before the mixed martial artist got a hold of him, because once the fight fell to the mat, where things get nasty, the boxer is all but finished.

But, as Mayweather points out, the often (by boxing standards) clumsy and lead-with-their-face UFC guys would have to walk through a hail of vicious jabs, crosses and hooks to get there.

"Take Chuck Liddell," Mayweather said of the UFC's biggest star and light heavyweight champion (about 205 pounds). "Put him in the ring with a (boxer) who is just 10-0 and Chuck Liddell would get punished."

I need more information but they seem to be great athletes.

    If UFC isn't a sport then how could boxing be. Many UFC fighters go through training to increase there boxing / striking capability. The fighter's go through intense workouts in preparation for their fights. The technique that is involved is astounding. The ultimate goal of UFC is to beat your opponent. No different than basketball or football. Just a different means to the end.

    Shit if golf can be a sport then why wouldn't UFC. They have to trane the whole time and its more work then any other sport in my opinion.

    i love the UFC. although i kind of wish that they would allow biting and stuff (i get frustrated watching the matches, always screaming, "BITE HIM! JUST BITE HIM!!!!"). anyone who has ever practiced a martial art knows that it is beyond sport... it's an ART.

    I'd love to see Mayweather get in the octagon then maybe he would appreciate what a real athlete is. MMA is the ultimate contact sport!!! These guys are in much better condition, and have to know more than boxing. It's hard to box if your on your back and the guy on top of you is cracking your head with elbows, while trying to submit you.

    they do roll around on the floor a bit to much for me. they should work on knock outs more and less on tap outs.

    It is absolutely a real sport, Dana White takes the UFC league very seriously and wants his fighters to be respectable atheletes not the mindless thugs that many still believe them to be. MMA is the most well defined form of weaponless combat competition that allows all of any discipline to attend and compete. If you are asking if it is a sport or if it is like pro wrestling, I assure you that these fighters are VERY real, and they are really fighting in that ring. On a personal note, UFC's CHW Champ Randy Couture at 44 retaining the ability to compete should let everyone know in combat sports, age is a number, will and ability are all that matters....

    There is no more pure form of weaponless combat today than Mixed Martial Arts and the premier league is the UFC.

    Mayweather was a bad ass to me, until he started running his mouth. And thats what he is doing. The boxer would beat someone from UFC, in the BOXING Ring. Now you go into the octagon and Mayweather is DEAD, and i mean that. thats like compairing Sprint campion to a long runner, they are the best at what THEY do, thats why they do it. But MMA is tougher than boxing...

    I don't watch boxing anymore. MMA (UFC, Bodog and others) offer a lot more action, skill, diversity for me to watch.
