This idea modifies Darwin's original theory of evolution by natural selection since Darwin argued that evolution proceeded gradually by the mutation of species over vast periods of time. Punctuated equilibrium on the other hand says that species might remain relatively static for long periods of time until a large environmental change forces conditions on the species. They then either adapt or die.
Since humans are a species in kind with the rest of the animal kingdom, they would be subject to the same evolutionary pressures. With the coming changes due to global climate change, I believe we as a species will be constrained to "adapt or die," just like the rest of the world.
Up until recently, humans have forestalled some evolutionary adaptations by forcing nature to conform to our requirements. I don't see this being as easy with the problems we face with global climate change. (more) -

Consumer confidence is about knee-high to a grasshopper. Auto sales are almost non-existent. I could go on, but I think I've made the point: this is the reap-what-you-sow effect in full-bore mode. Frankly, I'm surprised the economy has lasted as long as it has. I thought the DOW would be below 10k several years ago.

Here's my bias: Of course we need to cut military spending. It is an obscenity, a national embarrassment and destructive to the country's moral fabric. I am completely ashamed of my country's continuous, arrogant saber rattling. (more) -

Monday was, in my opinion, an orgy of buying that drove up prices. Many indicators are once again negative or nearly flat. As to gas prices, even though a barrel of oil has dropped significantly, I have a feeling that, because it is in the oil company's best interests to elect McCain, they are artificially depressing pump prices to hide the economic crisis, and make people forget about it (short memories is what they are counting on.).
So, even with a strong showing in the debate (which I seriously doubt will happen), McCain is just about out of the running. I read that no candidate who was 10 or more points down 3 weeks before the election has ever been elected. The negative turn that his campaign has taken has become a boat anchor dragging him down. +3 raves I always thought it was because if you multiply 7 times the number of years the average dog lives... I always thought it was because if you multiply 7 times the number of years the average dog lives (9-12, roughly) you get the average human life span (somewhere in the 70's). That way, you get some idea of what age and health issues the dog might be facing. A 9 year old dog potentially is dealing with the same issues as a 63 year old human. (more) -

After reading his statement, he threw his suit jacket on the ground, made an obscene gesture to the press corp, and dashed out a back exit, where he hopped on a motorcycle and yelled “See ya, bitches, I’m off to do my wife” as he rode away."
I couldn't stop laughing through the whole post, but that line was way over the top for me. (more)

Hey Rob! Thanks for the rave! I live in New Mexico too.. out here in the Glia Natl Forest where the Grey wolves run free. I see them from time to time. The re-introduction could be going better but they are multiplying slowly. Aerial hunting in Alaska must stop!! Who would want to harm these exquisite creatures?
