Wikipedia bans Scientologists in propaganda row

- The internet's war with Scientologists has stepped up a gear, after Wikipedia administrators decided to ban the from making changes to its site.

After a long debate, the online encyclopedia has decided to block anyone using an internet connection linked to the church from making changes to Wikipedia pages - in order to prevent propaganda changes and what it calls "sock puppet" attacks.

The news, first reported in The Register, marks the first time that has the online encyclopedia has taken such sweeping action against a single organisation.

In the past, Wikipedia has regularly banned individuals accused of making self-serving or inflammatory changes to the website, but no large group has been banned wholesale in the same way.... Read full article »

They're like children, really. Can't stand the slightest even vaguely critical comment. And there's plenty of them. This is a product of a sci-fi writer, and his creed is far from credible. The sooner a ban comes in Britain, the better.

I think it's really good that they did that. It would suck for someone who was trying to get legitimate info on something would be tricked into believing something else.

What would be legitimate information? That's not what I saw on there.

Maybe something on a certain denomination that scientologists disagree with.

Normally I would say bad move based on if Wikipedia did it based on clash of personalities or beliefs. But based on Wikipedia having a policy saying no large organizations can push their content to promote themselves I say good move on that part.

If Scientology seeks redress in court Wikipedia should stop referencing them at all. Why help perpetrate a scam. France, England, and Germany are among the growing list of countries that either limits them as a religion or bans them altogether.

Bravo! If they can't be corrected, take it out. When I was young, decades ago, defamation of character and slander were actual issues. Now freedom of speech and the internet makes it possible to defame anyone for any reason while stating things as a fact and no personal experience. An encyclopedia should just state facts. Otherwise, it furthers an opinion with no basis.

Is that so? You personally met all 10 million of them and found them insane?

Hmm you are right. That might have been too harsh. They are either insane or ignorant as to the true nature of their Church.

or maybe because you believe all the propaganda against Scientology that you read, and in fact, you are the one ignorant of what they actually believe.

Did you know that in WW2 Germany the news media constant portrayal of Jews in a bad light had the German population actually believing that they were less than human. Propaganda is propaganda. Think for yourself.

Haha. No I know what Scientology is. I've done my research. Scientology is a cult and a dangerous one at that. I have no doubt the French courts will find them guilty of fraud. We should do the same here

The game of cat/mouse begins... Wikipedia will need to continually monitor the page and enhance its security to enforce this rule. Scientologists will not sit back since they have a reputation to uphold.

Scientology should ask the court to enjoin Wikipedia from referencing them at all...If Scientology can't edit...surly a court could be persuaded...Lift the ban or drop the references...

IT would be best for them...never did look their BEST in the Media Anyway...

A business should not be expected to allow their Essence to be edited ...or their creditability to be questioned by Subversives with no RECOURSE other than sneaking around for a portal they can enter...

If they have Legal Liabilities....They have Legal Remedies!!!

In Addition!!!...Calling them a cult is getting pretty loosee..goosee with the words used to define CULT....loose enough to certainly include some of the Major Religions...IF NOT ALL...
