The Difference Between Cults and Religions

- In exchange for her cooperation, Maryland prosecutors have offered Ria Ramkissoon a reduced charge in the case against Queen Antoinette who leads a West Baltimore cult known as One Mind Ministries. Ria, and other members of the group, starved Ria's son to death because he did not say 'Amen' when he was directed to do so. It's troubling, but probably no worse than similar deals made in courtrooms across the nation every day.

What's really troubling, at least initially, is the story of a woman willing to sacrifice her son because her faith demanded it. But is Ria Ramkissoon's story any worse than the story of a man who waits his whole life to have a child, and then, when he finally does, he carries that child to a mountain top where he prepares him as an offering to the god who tells him to do so? Is her story worse than that of another father who sends his only son into the world just so he can watch him suffer and die an agonizing death?... Read full article »

"First, cults tend to centralize power in the hands of a single individual or small group that is considered beyond questions. Second, they treat all questions about the group and its beliefs as intolerable challenges to the group's authority and authenticity. Third, they demean all those who do not share their beliefs and sow fear and mistrust amongst their believers about all such people. Fourth, they typically cut off all or most opportunities for members to interact freely with those outside the group. And finally, they take revenge upon those who choose to leave the group, in ways which include, cutting them off from all relationships with those who remain inside, confiscation of material goods and even physical harm."

Yeah, the difference is not huge at all, many religions have at least 4 out of 5.

What's the difference than all those fundamentalists throw out their own kids cause they are gay or uppity feminists, or the Chinese who kill their girl babies or the prolifers just love to watch somebody fry. Where did you get the idea that people are just or sane or even that they love their children. Sunday, I had to listen to a dyke in the Unitarian Church talk about taking her "twelve" year old to the homophobia rally inauguration debacle. To think even a dyke would worship the messiah with his pet homophobe. Did you see homophobia/crackerhood personified on Larry King? What a douchebag. dyke worship messiah pet homophobe homophobiacrackerhood personified larry king douchebag dyke worship messiah pet homophobe homophobiacrackerhood personified larry king douchebag

I think that cults are NOT so far off from religion in general. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with my faith and completely comfortable with it. But this article makes a good point in saying that AT ONE TIME our religions were considered to be blasphemy. As time passed, people grew more and more accepting. It would be close-minded of us not to AT LEAST consider the possibility that these "cults" may soon grow in popularity.

As a sidenote: this in NO way means that I give my approval for the things that some of these people do. I think it's awful and a horrible thing and there should NEVER be a reason to hurt a child or another human like that...ever.

Cults are creepy religions that try to elevate one person to God status and punish you if you leave.

Scientology seems to fit the bill then! Don't all those zealots basically worship L. Ron Hubbard? Scientologists do everything they can to prevent you from leaving the cult because that would be a lost income source.

IMO there is no difference between a religion and a cult. Be your own person in life don't listen to other people tell you how to live.

There is no difference. You like to follow others, whether it be a priest or a book, without question. All you religious nuts are just as bad as these Kool-Aid drinking, baby-starving cultists!

The only difference between a cult and a religion is that one openly admits and doesn't hide the fact that it's crazy while the other uses money to hide its true intentions.
