Ten Commandments Monument Promotes Christianity: Should we change the Ten Commandments?

Marilyn June 10, 2009 00:09:20

A Ten Commandments monument outside an Oklahoma courthouse has been deemed discriminatory to non-Christians.

A federal appeal has ruled that the Ten Commandments unnecessarily advertise Christianity at the expense of other religions, including atheism.

The Oklahoma courthouse refuses to remove the monument of the Ten Commandments while Haskell County attorneys are asking that the case be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Should the Ten Commandments be atheist-friendly?

    I think...

This is not a Christian country - it's a country that protects the religious freedom of all people - Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Wiccans, Agnostics, Hindus, Native Americans, Jews and the odd person down the street who worships his left toe.

About the Ten Commandments, I really don't care. As an example of moral law, they may have some venue relevance. But no Christian has a 'right' to their existence in that or any other hall of government.

Why should you change it? It's ancient and someone wrote it centuries ago and made his rules final. If you changed it now, it'll just be a messed up lie.

(I don't even believe in god, I'm just saying...)

We should recognise that some people hold different views, and respect is needed. So I don't think it shouldn't be there, and for some it's nothing more than a slap in the face to the atheists which is wrong.

How long have they been around? A long time, Right? Just because there are people that don't like it doesn't mean it should be taken away. Christians also have freedom of Religion. (I am not christian. I am no 1 religion. I have many beliefs) I suppose that, if you changed the Ten commandments, Christians would feel about the same as a True American would feel if you changed the Bill of Rights.

    I think...

okay, i am TOTAL CHRISTAIN. and i do believe this country should protect all religions.but the thing is this coutry was based of christain beliefs.we should not have to change the 10 commandments because another religion take offense to it.it rediculous for 1 religion to have to change somethin that they follow so it does not offend others. lets say we do change it so it does not offend athiest, well once we change it 4 athiest then will the muslims want to change it again so it does not offend them.think about it?.. the 10 commandments are somethin that God gave to moses on the mountain. these are Gods words! we should not change them!! and the only reason they r not publically displayed is b/c of a religion complaining its unfair to show 1 religion and not all the others in the court room. 1 person changed it all. and i dnt think that fair!

My only question is, how could you possibly make the ten commandments 'atheist-friendly' when the ten commandments comes from the Bible? Makes no sense to me. Everybody is so worried about offending everyone else. Although I see very little worry over offending christians.

The 10 Commandments belong to Muslims and Jews.
I don't know if Christians follow the 10 Commandments. (So many Christians refute and reject the entire Old Testament!)
Regardless, the 10 Commandments are religious and have no place on Government property.
Church property and private property are proper places for religious monuments and symbols.

Why does religion have no place on Goverment property? This country was based from Christain beliefs. they should be able to stay where they were places many years ago!

Quite simply, the 1st Amendment protects me from the government forcing any religious beliefs on me.
Not Mormon, Catholic, Islam, 7th Day Adventist, Buddhist, or any other religion can be forced on me. I have the freedom to worship or not worship however I choose.
Although many of the founding fathers were Christian, they deliberately made certain that our government could never impose any religion on Americans because they saw the abuses that came from government imposed religion.
Never has 'Protestantism' or 'Catholicism' or 'Islam' or 'Judaism' been an official religion in America.

This is how they were intended, anyway.

And to anyone who thinks that there should be no separation of church and state, why don't we put up monuments like this at our government buildings? After all, America was founded on some values that are shared by Satanists. That means that America was founded on Satanist values.

No, the Ten Commandments should remain discriminatory to atheists

They are called the ten commandments because they are commandments, not suggestions.

The Commandments were dictated by God and just because we choose not to follow them does not give us the right to change them. We each choose our own path to follow and ultimately pay the price in the end.

No, the Ten Commandments should remain discriminatory to atheists

That's a mean way to put it. I think it would be discriminatory to Christians if they were changed. Though if they did the Family Guy Ten Commandments, I could deal with it.
"Commandment number one: Shut the Hell up
Commandment number two: I can't do anything about the Sun
Commandment number three: There are no more jolly ranchers, we are all out
Commandment number four: Do not read the billboards that we pass
    Move out!"

    I think...

The Ten Commandments were meant for all of mankind, it is of free will to accept or not believe. Therefore if an Atheist followed the Ten Commandments, they would be Atheist-friendly, or just stop ignoring the truth that some Atheist already follow the commandments, or most of them, we just call them man's laws.
