Obama's momma a Mormon?

- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched an investigation of church members who posthumously baptized President Obama’s late mother last year and possibly baptized his late father as well.

On June 4, the day after Obama secured the Democratic presidential nomination, a church member baptized by proxy the president’s mother Stanley Ann Dunham inside a temple in Provo, Utah.

Though it’s still unclear whether the submission of Dunham’s name was a prank or sincere gesture, church spokeswoman Kim Farah said baptizing someone who is not related is a “serious breach” of church policy.

“The offering of baptism to our deceased ancestors is a sacred practice to us and it is counter to Church policy for a Church member to submit names for baptism for persons to whom they are not related,” Farah said in a statement. “The Church is looking into the circumstances of how this happened and does not yet have all the facts. However, this is a serious matter and we are treating it as such.”... Read full article »

Hmmmm. The road to hell and all of that I suppose. I see this from both sides. To anyone who grew up in the religion as I did this is not an unusual occurance. We except it as a norm in our lives. They don't consider it to be an isult to the dead. They think they are offering a choice to accept what they think is the true way to salvation. It really isn't any different from the way religion's offer it here to the living. But I can also see why it would offend people of other faith's. Especially holocaust victims. I mean they died BECAUSE of their religious belief's!

Great, something else to distract people from the issues that actually matter.

Does anyone actually think that when we arrive at the throne on judgement day, God is really gonna be concerned with what style of religion that we practiced while on earth? The Bible warns of worshiping golden images not golden religions. The gospel comes to different people in different forms, just its still the gospel.

No! Nor do I think God turns anyone away. No more than we would turn away from one of our own children!
    Love your thought process!

Baptizing someone have they are dead has been a long standing practice for Mormon Church to fill their coffers, as they can lay claim to a portion, or all of, the dead persons estate.

Baptizing by proxy... If you told me you took someone else, and dubbed them my stand in and baptized said person, and that made me a member of their church, I would tell you were to go, how to get there, and what to do when you arrived.

You got any evidence for that claim about coffers and estates?

In the immortal words of Wikipedia: “[citation needed]

What are you talking about? They cannot claim any portion of a dead person's estate.

What is this thread? Is this a 'mass perception re-boot'?

She was a Marxist! Her religious conviction is a relatively minor consideration in comparison to her political philosophy.

Are we looking at the influnces on a head of State here (however unlawfully authorized), or those on a church minister?

The woman was a Marxist! Thats crucial!

So were the early Apostles, and they actually practiced a Marxist-like economic system in the early Christian Church, using nearly the exact same words Marx would use to summarize his system over 1¾ millennia later.

    • Acts 2:44–45
    • Acts 4:31–37
    (continuing on into)
    • Acts 5:1–11 (showing God Himself enforcing honest participation in this system)

Great! There's about 4 or 5 dozen folks I regularly see living on the street. Post your name and address, so I can refer them to you. I'm certain they'd be very pleased to have equal use of all those things you've worked so long and hard to give them.

You ... do actually practice what you preach ... don't you?

Oh also, ... how many people have you stoned to death this past year?

I hope you see my point. Like stoning ... communality has proven to be an unworkable ideal however much it appeals to people's emotional sensibilities.

But, if you ... really ... believe in your position, I'll be waiting for that info.

I never said I’m a Christian. I just happen to know what the Bible says, and enjoy pointing out such things that drive Christians up the wall when they find out what their book really says (e.g. the Bible is actually very pro-abortion!).

As for communality being unworkable, true. Even God apparently couldn’t make it work for long, as it’s not mentioned past Acts 5:11. :-)

All of this religious distraction aside, the Kenyan Usurper surely learned more about Marxist political philosophy from his mom than much else.
