Is Kwanzaa a racist holiday?

Astor December 14, 2007 20:51:54

James Coleman, a former Black Panther, argues, "By only stressing the unity of black people, Kwanzaa separates black people from the rest of Americans. Americans must unify on whatever principles ensure we live in a safe, prosperous, God-loving country, with the race and ethnicity of any American seeking to abide by those principles being of no consequence."

This may suprise many people, but people who aren't of African ancestry can celebrate it too (although most who do celebrate because they are invited to do so by Africans).
I personally find it no more racist than St. Patrick's day, and it's better in that it generally doesn't lead to people getting drunk and causing disturbances.

Is Christmas actually a Christian holiday? I thought Christmas was an another spend all your money holiday. But frankly I believe that Kwanzaa is a cultural thing that many blacks celebrate. As to what it really was about I'm not sure. But I think it has something to do with some type of independence. But I could be wrong about that. As for being racist! No! The holiday Kwanzaa is no more racist then Halloween being a holiday of Christianity! Frankly who the hell cares!!

When Kwanzaa was first appeared I had no idea what it was about. So, being the person that I am I asked on of my friends, who happened to be Black, what it was about.

He told me it was to celebrate the Cultural History of the Black American and to remind them where they came from.

I remember asking him if it had to do with anything about slavery and he said basically no.

    it can be debated.
If nothing else, it is 'seperatist' in my opinion.

Is the celebration of the chinese new year or Cinco de maya a cultural celebration or separatist and racist?

    you make a good point.
any 'innocent' celebration can be misinterpreted by those who are not familiar with the history and the culture of the 'celebration'.
I wager some of the American Native generations consider July 4 as 'racist'.
I try to research and to understand all sides of these types of issues. Sometimes I miss something. But , I do try to be open to learn.

    I don't think so.

Minorities understand cultural differences because we live in a white society. We assimulate into white culture and hold to our own. Whites, however, unless they have migrated from another country or continued their cultural celebrations, like the irish, hold to no cultural but a system of white supremacy of our country.

Jwalden, next time you want an answer to what is racist. Ask yourself if blacks are being separatist or racist, ask your self if you have this same complain against the chinese, japanese, latinos or other ethnic groups in our society. You will be surprise the racism is always against blacks for wanting to adopt their cultural or hold steadfast to their culture. I have yet to see a complain on how chinese dress, live, communication or use slang language between themself.

I don't think I would use insensitive because you do want to understand. I think you just do not separate racism from culturally difference. My ex-husband was the same way for a while.

Ernest, I've seen many postings from you, and you seem to be very, very racist. There shouldn't be a holiday for any racial group, period. Black people don't need their own holiday any more than White people do. And threatening me with physical violence? Big SodaHead no-no.

Because you've threatened me with violence and repeatedly been disrespectful to me, you're blocked. Besides, there's no point talking to someone who "would like to meet Louis Farrakhan."

THIS IS TO SHIRKIE WHO BLOCKED ME. YOU USED THE WORD LYNCH FIRST AND IT ROLLED OFF YOUR WRITING LIKE YOU ENJOYED IT. KWANZA IS A HOLIDAY CELEBRATION WHERE MANY CELEBRATE BOTH CHRISTMAS AND KWANZAA, SOME CELEBRATE EITHER/OR. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS THAT ARE CELEBRATED NATIONALLY IN THIS COUNTRY? FEEL THE SAME, OR IS THAT A DIFFERENT THING WITH YOU? I'M GLAD YOU DID BLOCK ME BECAUSE YOU ARE DUMB ANYWAY, AND I CARE NOT TO RESPOND TO YOU. NOW, RUN TELL THAT!

Kind of, but to each his own....I just don't see the point in calling yourself African-American and not wanting to participate in American culture. It goes beyond religion etc.. It just seems like to me that Kwanzaa was made up by the NAACP to distance blacks from whites to make a point. It seems like a real Louis Farrakhan move to me....the whole invention of Kwanza

Who cares will be my official answer.

  • Paul ERNEST May 14, 2008 18:51:44

I am absolutely 100 percent against Louis Farrakhan. make that 110 % and I think only a racist ignorant man would follow his teachings. I don't see how you can compare Jefferson Davis but if you are talking about slavery then what is your point?

I feel like Jefferson Davis is an old racist bastard that did a lot of good for the country but is equally damnable.

Kwanzaa was created by black activist to distance themselves from white culture....so yes it is was invented as a racist holiday... However, I don't think all who celebrate are are racists. That would be like saying that everyone who celebrates the 4th of July is a racist slave owner....

You would think it is to distance whites and blacks because you beleive we have not culture as whites have no culture. We adopt the culture of our ancestors and this white america do not like because they want us to be black and only black. No history, no culture and no future.
