Question Religion

Is Christianity nothing more than a 2000 year old Cult?

Dark Demonic ~ War ~ Horseman of the Apocalypse December 31, 2008 23:29:56

Why are modern day religions all passed off as cults (Scientology, for one), while Christianity doesn't really seem that different, just bigger?

Yes. Without a doubt.

    Yes. Without a doubt.

Most appear to be nice people but there is that little part of their religion that says any person that doesn't believe in "Jesus" will be tortured for all of eternity in a lake of fire.

I think that it would be a bit difficult for anyone to argue that a belief system based upon the threat of eternal unending suffering to anyone that denies their messiah is not a cult in the very negative sense.

Generally, no, it's not a cult, but there are some Christian sects that are most certainly cults. What defines a cult is the great focus on practices and ritual. Christianity is -supposed- to simply be a relationship with Jesus, and it was a movement away from pagan practices (which, btw, Jesus said were no longer "necessary". He didn't say they were wrong.) Catholicism retains many cult practices, as do Mormonism, Baptism, Lutheranism... Basically, any religion that zeroes in more on the practices and the cult (cult comes from the word "culture") beliefs more than a relationship with God or multiple gods is a cult. For example, I'd see shamanism as a cult, but not animism. Does that make sense? The definition of cult has changed over the centuries, so unfortunately, how any of us define cult is a matter of perspective.

    No, it's not a cult.

Most cults are very new because cults usually follow very destructive patterns. They are much more closely tied to their founders than to the things their founders actually said (which is why what they say changes), the founders at some point become extremely paranoid and dictatorial, there are techniques designed to brainwash the believers into unconditional belief regardless of any facts, there is extreme hostility to outsiders, and there is usually a total collapse following the leader's death.

    Yes. Without a doubt.

The word "cult" has been demonized; however, that isn't to say that I approve of the dogma taught in any church.

    Good Question.

Acts like one. Celebrates death, loves human sacrifice, and metaphorical cannibalism.
