Most appear to be nice people but there is that little part of their religion that says any person that doesn't believe in "Jesus" will be tortured for all of eternity in a lake of fire.
I think that it would be a bit difficult for anyone to argue that a belief system based upon the threat of eternal unending suffering to anyone that denies their messiah is not a cult in the very negative sense.
Generally, no, it's not a cult, but there are some Christian sects that are most certainly cults. What defines a cult is the great focus on practices and ritual. Christianity is -supposed- to simply be a relationship with Jesus, and it was a movement away from pagan practices (which, btw, Jesus said were no longer "necessary". He didn't say they were wrong.) Catholicism retains many cult practices, as do Mormonism, Baptism, Lutheranism... Basically, any religion that zeroes in more on the practices and the cult (cult comes from the word "culture") beliefs more than a relationship with God or multiple gods is a cult. For example, I'd see shamanism as a cult, but not animism. Does that make sense? The definition of cult has changed over the centuries, so unfortunately, how any of us define cult is a matter of perspective.
Most cults are very new because cults usually follow very destructive patterns. They are much more closely tied to their founders than to the things their founders actually said (which is why what they say changes), the founders at some point become extremely paranoid and dictatorial, there are techniques designed to brainwash the believers into unconditional belief regardless of any facts, there is extreme hostility to outsiders, and there is usually a total collapse following the leader's death.
No, seriously. I was hoping you knew. You sounded like you knew something I didn't. I didn't mean what I wrote to sound sarcastic. I'll google it, then return.
I remember in my history classes, there were a lot of cults in Roman times. Some of them were santified by the state, others, like the Christians, were not.
Church means a gathering of people to worship. Therefore any place that a group gathers can be called a church. One Google definition said it is a "place where spiritual knowledge is found."
No, if Jesus has remained dead, then Christianity would have ended there. We rejoice not in the cannibalistic sense of Jesus having been our victim but in the context of His willing sacrifice to bring us back to God and for that we sacrifice our selves in our choosing not to go our own way but to be with the Father. The underlying concept is love and in that love there is life.
