some where along the way we told every kid that they are special and the world was their oyster, and somehow they've taken it to mean that the world revolves around me. I think the cure is a healthy dose of reality, which their parents can supply by parenting

I remember when I started secondary school andcame across a senior, I couldn't even look them in the eyes, because I had so much respect for them being older and in their last year of school. 5 years later when I was in my last year a 5th grader pushed me and called me a bitch for being in his way. Kids now have no more respect.

Both they are being taught to respect nothing but money! Only a few are led to Christian morality. Honor, respect, ethics, faith, and loyality are not tops only money!!!! Their little egos are way out of porportion to their real worth or ability.

There are many reasons for that. Troubled homes and too much unsupervised free time are just some of them.

You are right with a divorce rate of 60% and kids watching video games 6 to 8 hours a day lose touch with reality. Then we have TV which has hours and hours of sex, by the time their 12 or 13 they know more than I did at 20 and I had already been in the far east for two years at that time. My wife taught middle school for 17 years and it was a constant problem with these little sex manics having sex in the bathroom, under the bleachers or anywhere else they could find out of site. We worry about molesters hell their molesting each other!

Kids these day are rude and disrespectfull. They show little respect for any one, especially their parents. Parents at times fail to teach them manners and allow them to act the way they do. True story: my nephew was over my house visiting, his mom called and he apparently skipped school and came over. The conversation progressed on between him and Mom. He than states, "go bleep your self, your an a-hole" Then he tried to give me attitude, I told him that he was not allowed to speak to his mom, better yet any one like that and if he continued he would not be allowed in my home. In closing not to say that some parents do a wonderful job and have very polite children, because they do and often are ruined by the bad ones.

Mina you're right to some degree. There is alot of entitlement and snobbery going on with young folk. I firmly believe that teaching all kids that they are entitled, should be famous and are always winners has brought us some snotty little ones with some unfortunate lessons ahead of them. Beyond that manners in general have become a lot art...for us old folks as well. Check out the nastiness and name calling we get into sometimes even on a blog!

Over the years there appears to be a continuing decline in the respect the younger generation has for other people. They are commonly refered to as the ME generation. The name says it all, it's all about ME. As stated by others below, they feel the world revolves around them. I fault the parents and school system in raising them. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying they have no respect for their elders, they have no respect for anyone. This is not to say there are no exceptions, some are taught values and respect, but those do not get the recognition.

MANY HAVE NO ONE TO TEACH THEM SINCE THEIR PARENTS ARE CLUELESS....THE KIDS THESE DAYS RESPOND TO GOOD DISAPLINE IF IT IS APPLIED...I TEACH AND USUSALLY THE KIDS START OUT TRYING ME..BEING RUDE AND MOUTHY UNTIL THEY REALZE I CARE AND WON'T PUT UP WITH THIS..THEY SOON BECOME VERY RESPECTFUL. IT TAKES MORE EFFORT TO TRAIN KIDS RIGHT ...THIS SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM..LAZY PARENTS ECT.

It is a strange balance. All 'kids' tend to revolt but civility has deteriorated over time. Kids used to be very respectful (outwardly) when they were to 'be seen but not heard'. Over time we have taught them that they have rights too. And now they believe us. They learn by example though, bet their parents aren't too civil either, unless they're just ignored.

The younger generation feels as if they are entitled to more because of the advent of the information age. We are seeing younger and younger successful people and a decline in the need for older workers. It's a shame that our growing knowledge as a society leads to more disrespect.
