Do you believe in the human soul?

I was just surfing the web the other day and came across a page that said the human mind, how we think, what we think, and when we think it, is all just a bunch of chemical reactions and has nothing to do with free will. If this is true... is the soul a part of reality, or a myth?

Answered: yes, the soul is real
Free will is something given to us by God. If you do not believe in God that is between you and your beliefs. I Believe in God and free will. If we had no free will every time we did something stupid or wrong we could say the "devil" made me do it. We are free to choose between what is right or wrong or indifferent aren't we. If we had no free will we all would be alike doing everything the same like robots.

We are made up of three things
1. A body, obviously what you can physically see and touch.
2. Our Soul, which contains 3 things our Mind, Will, and Emotions. this is where we make our decisions, decyfer what we feel!
3. A Spirit, the actual part of us that goes to heaven or hell, Our supernatural piece that is connected to God. (this is the part that animals lack)

No, they have a will/instinct for survival, and you can tell when a dog is happy, (wags tail) angry (growls) and so on! they dont go to heaven or hell though!

It is our higher self, our inner emotions, our innate desires and intentions, our thoughts, our responses to situations, everything about us is part of our soul.

Our soul cannot be destroyed, and we live on through time.. returning as new humans, with the same soul from before.

All human life is series of chemical reactions. The idea that free will does not exist because of this is baseless. There is no reason that a mind that uses chemicals for communication and data storage can not be free. In fact I would say that becuase of this the mind is free.

For the sake of transparency, I am a Chemist.

I think that when your born, you're born with an energy. And energy cannot be created nor destroyed, so all through your life energy is expelled, stronger sensations or actions would take more energy. It would explain the ghosts/apparations/spirits, whatever you want to call 'em.

That is a very existential outlook. I would encourage you to consider not just the energy which makes up your body but also the matter. Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen are the primary chemicals which make up a human being. All of these were created by fusion billions of years ago in a star that has since died and spread its remaining part across the galaxy. When you think about it your life is a temporary expression of matter and energy. It just happens to be what these atoms are doing right now. Your body is not really yours. After you are dead, the parts that make you who you are will be doing something else.

Well, let's say that there's some sort of cosmic force uniting us all, "God" if you will.. How could we possibly comprehend something like that? We have to quantify it, because that's what we humans do, and we have to qualify it. So we call it something: "The soul." And we picture it as some floating white cloud of gooshy happiness-- when in fact, it is just some impossibly complex system that has no shape, name, or form whatsoever.

Imagine an ant trying to comprehend us. That's how feeble our attempts would be at attempting to comprehend the soul or God.

I got you now, yeah, I understand what you mean. I live in the Bible belt so everybody bitches at me when I tell them I believe in a superior being, but not in the Bible. I just wanted to see how many people believed in what. It gets interesting.

Yes it does, and I understand. I have family in the bible belt and I live in a very religiousy community. Consequently, I don't voice my ideas very often to avoid problems, and you should probably do the same-- religious people can get very angry when you question their beliefs!

yeah...but, I speak my mind. My mom is very liberal and raised me that way. She didn't believe in censoring anything I watch or listen to, she's awesome. She also told me to stand up for what I believe in and when they start telling me I'm wrong and will burn in hell and how I need to change my life, now I'm ranting so... I won't say anything about the mean, nasty, pushy ones. The other ones are cool. I just hate it when someone feels like they need to change you then and there.
