Question Religion

Do you believe in Genetic Testing on Babies to determine what color eyes, hair, etc..they will have or being able to create the picture perfect child, in your eyes?

Shay November 03, 2009 18:45:04

Many believe it is wrong because people are trying to play the role of God. Others just think it's a way to get their "perfect" child. What do you think?
You!

That's a horrible idea. A child is born the way it is supposed to be and it's fine just the way it is. The only reason I could possibly see for genetic altering is if the baby would be susceptible to a life-threatening disease or a disorder such as autism.

I wish they did that with me! LOL. Imagine having a perfect body cause of correctness they do to your mother's sperm...but if it is really risky I wouldn't do that kind of procedure on my eggs or sperm thingy. Well I'm pretty insecure of my body that's why I said that.

I sorta agree with you that. I'm very insecure too so if everybody could just have the body they want..which probably would never happen..then I would be okay with it as long as there were no side effects or anything.

I think genetic testing is okay as far as checking for genetic defects , but as for using it to find out how the baby will look that is a separate matter.

Way interesting topic! I have feelings all over the place on this! My basic thought is if this can create less things like autism...etc. then if may have it's place? Beyond that I really wonder? Eye color? Yikes!

Yeah! this really is an interesting topic! Sometimes I wonder because if there are no effects on the baby it would be quite interesting to know what your baby is going to look like and such, but I don't think I would do it. Nonetheless, if it could prevent birth disorders then it would be amazing!

I understand the curiosity to know what your baby will look like, so testing that is fine. But deciding how your child looks like is wrong. It's not natural and you should not care about how your child looks. Our society is so vain.

That is very true. My baby brother has spina bifida. He is only three and is paralyzed from the waist down. Imgaine if they would be able to cure that. Hopefully with stem cell research, he'll be able to.

A huge "amen" to that. God gave us brains capable of abstract thought. That's the "what if" thing. Not to use those brains is truly a sin. Best wishes for your brother.

    No.

God belief, or lack thereof, isn't necessary in this question. However, it won't start with those features. It will start with removing genetic defects, etc.

Hi Shay. Me too. But it's like everything else; we'll have to take a look at every situation, and make sure we don't rush anything. Considering what your brother went through, you must be relieved that the Bush ban on stem-cell research has been lifted. Cheers.

No, I wouldn't do this...creepy! This manipulation makes me think of an old Twilight Zone episode in which when girls reached the age of 16 they picked one of three model prototypes into which they would be transformed...kinda Stepford Wife-like...and this one girl was refusing to do it and in the end they did some sort of lobotomy on her so that she would agree to being transformed into one of the standard looks acceptable in the society. stepford wife-like girl refusing sort lobotomy transformed standard acceptable society
