Ted Kennedy was airlifted to the hospital this morning with stroke like symptoms and Is currently in Massachussets General. Is he the end of the Kennedy Camelot legacy?
We all wish him well and pray he recovers. He is the last surviving of the 4 Kennedy boys. The Kennedy clan has been a dynasty of Democratic politics and we all look back at Camelot. Is Ted the last of the Kennedy Camelot legacy or do the children carry it on?-
oh my dear dear friend Arleen here is where we split our Martinis.

At the Lawrence Cottage, Kennedy summoned his cousin, Joe Gargan, and another friend, Paul Markham, to return to the scene of the accident. Kennedy sat in the back of a white Plymouth Valiant rental car that Kopechne had used that day. Though there was a working telephone at this location, the group waited 10 hours before they contacted the police. Kennedy then returned to the submerged car with Gargan and Markham who then resumed trying to reach her. The group claimed that the tidal current prevented them from reaching her for fear of being swept out to sea. However tidal records indicated that the tide was running in the opposite direction at the time of the supposed attempted rescue.
He pled guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was sentenced to two months in jail, suspended.
In January of 1970, an inquest into Kopechne's death took place in Edgartown. At the request of Kennedy's lawyers, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ordered the inquest be conducted in secret
He pled guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was sentenced to two months in jail, suspended.
Judge James A. Boyle presided over the inquest. His conclusions were as follows:
"Kopechne and Kennedy did not intend to return to Edgartown" at the time they left the party.
"Kennedy did not intend to drive to the ferry slip".
"[Kennedy]'s turn onto Dike Road was intentional".
Judge Boyle also said that "negligent driving appears to have contributed to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne".
Under Massachusetts law Boyle could have ordered Kennedy's arrest, but he chose not to do so. District Attorney Dinis chose not to pursue Kennedy for manslaughter, despite Judge Boyle's conclusions.
On television Kennedy later said he was not driving under the influence of alcohol. It would be the first time he wasn't under the influence of alcohol. THAT'S FOR SURE!

He is Cat, sorry..He is a KENNEDY and here in MA they are royalty..you do not live here so you do not 'get' the tradition. Frankly I am surprised you would put a person down who is in such poor health. A 40 yr old issue-he has paid the price.
The times were different then..drinking and driving was acceptable..a slap on the hand. No cell phones and protect the family honor at all costs..Mary-Jo's family 'got it'..the times.
I am aware how you feel about him and the 'clan' and the Boston Irish-Catholic democrats so I am not going to read your comments..that way I will not take offense.
I know the entire story and more so the post was not needed. Reminder, my family are police and fire dept..I live 30 minutes away from the Kennedy compound. I am hurt that you would go into all that..knowing where my loyalties lay.
I have bypassed a few of your polls knowing we do not see eye to eye on a couple of issues to be respectful of your views.
I need breathing room now.. -
You are right Arleen and I owe you an apology. I too am Catholic which I think where my anger comes from. I adored Bobby, my brother Ben and I held each other and wept and wept and simply did not understand the ways in which our Lord choose to move that day. When John John ( he would always be that rather than John Jr. ) and Carolyn died, I screamed out loud at him for hours for not having enough instrument training to fly at night. All the guys in my family are professional pilots and we've always had a plane. My flight training knowledge is considerable, so had some reason to be angry I thought. My rage and anger were the heart break I could not face. When I did it was such sorrow. The President had driven through my junior high school driveway and waved at all of us before he boarded the plane to go to Dallas. It seemed such a short time later that our Principal was on the PA system crying. We ( my parents and I ) headed to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving the next day to be with my Grandparents. The second in a very odd event with my Father and " the men in black ", in regards to the President happened on the way. Another story. As soon as we hit the Grandparents I always bolted to my best friend Leigh's house ( she is my daughter's God Mother as her Mother was, long time friends) We spent every second for the next week with both TV's on watching every second crying, watching, learning and making indelible memories of the history we were a part of. I did so much want you to know the passion and love I have felt for so many of the Kennedys. So although I do not agree with all the politics, I love the humanity and the persona of so many. I vote the person not the party, I judge the person not the family. I have voted Democrat, several times. And now I am an American Patriot. 1. a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. 2. a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, esp. of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government. I love my country and I am appalled by my government. Besides owning you my dear friend an apology for not thinking of who and where I was spouting off to and about with my considerably large although well educated mouth. That speaks WAY BEFORE IT THINKS WITH PASSION ON RELIGION & POLITICS! The one thing you did remind me of that is very important.
As for Ted in his life and especially in his hour of need and crisis I will remember

Camelot was always a myth. It only got it's mythic stature as a great moment in time after the assasination. For me, Kennedy was never that great of a president to be honest. The whole Kennedy thing is so overplayed. Bobby was surely the best, but John and Ted? And the next generation? Sure there are some high points but they are diamonds in a field of poo. Too may rich, Yankee playboys with old money for my taste. Just my opinion, no offence meant.

no offence taken..I know Europeans refer to us us yanks and we are not offended. When an American calls we New England yankees its offensive to those of us who are not of English ancestry. In the Boston area we are predominantly Irish Catholic, not "wasps" from the
'Irish Need not Apply' yankees

'Camelot' died with JFK. While I have never respect Sen Kennedy, I will pray for him.
