The jews were murdered in the millions and the Japanese were held in interment camps here in the US like common criminals just for being Japanese. These atrocities took place in recent history. There are many people alive that suffered because of racism, not just African Americans. History is filled with people being treated unfairly and horrendously because of the color of their skin, their nationality and their beliefs. People experience prejudice everyday in this country because they are gay or fat or disabled or an immigrant, it is not just African Americans, yet somehow all kinds of prejudice exsist that are almost accepted much more so than racism aimed at African Americans.
Racism does not and has not only affected African Americans and as long as people continue demanding apolgies and special treatment and continue to be victims, racism will always exsist at the forefront.
Everyone has experienced an injustice at some point in their life except for a very few charmed people....It's what they do to rise above it, it's about not being a victim. It's about leaving the past in the past and moving forward. -

I used to think that and I do believe it is getting better. However, from reading the comments and questions here, I would have to say a lot of issues have not been resolved. We have to continue to work to come together. In the end though, it will all be worth it! -

racism will never go away as long as there are evil twisted people out there no matter what color they are it's a damn shame some people are like that I can only speak for myself and hopefully I can find other people who care more about the person than the color of their skin -

But very, very slowly. I've lived long enough to know it has faded in the US. Until Brown v the Board of Education, I went to a segregated school system -- not in the deep South -- in Missouri. There is no de jure discrimination by race anymore -- it's all gone (gay folks still live with some de jure discrimination, in that they can't legally marry each other, be a dependent on one another's Social Security, etc). We have more and more biracial marriages -- something I think is the best cure there is for racism.
But ... there are still remants and more than remnants in people's hearts -- look at the rants against Obama -- many of those are racially based, even if the person doing it refuses to admit that. How many people walking at night in a city and seeing a large black man coming the other direction have at least a moment's pause or worry? How many people just brushed off Falwell and Robertson when they said 9/11 was America's chickens coming home to roost (or even agreed with them -- all that sin), but are still raving about the same comment by the Rev Wright? How many people move to lily-white suburbs to get away from "them"? How many people think that "sticking to your own kind" is natural and refers to skin color?
Believe me -- I know how much better it is now than it was 50 years ago. But I know we still have a ways to go. -

Especially now with the race to the white house. I wish it weren't true, but alot of the comments I read here yesterday came from some very racist people. I wish people could see these candidates as people and vote them in on what they stand for instead of what they look like. -

Five Reasons I Do NOT Think Obama Will WIN:
1) I do not think ANY president should "try" cocaine.
2) I do not think that MY president should smoke marijuana. I'm not opposed to people smoking it. I don't think the president should.
3) I do not think that he should call his grandma a "typical white person"... (feeds into the racism)
4) I do not think he should stand by a questionable racist priest for 20 years.
5) And lastly, I do not think he should DROP his friends because he is trying to save face and run for office. -

No because for EVERY political debate, whether it be presidential or in an inauguration speech, someone always have to make a comment about race issues, for instance "oh um obama has the black vote n clinton won in w. virginia with 60% of the white vote" and "clinton, how will u help the black people and obama, wat can u offer the whites?" See? stuff like th at always come up. UNTILL people GROW THE HELL UP, racism and discrimmination will ALWAYS reign... peace n love

I think it is in some parts of the world, while in others it is growing stronger.I know when I was growing up, the thought of race didn't enter my mind until I learned about WWII and discrimination. Each of my friends looked different from one another, the color of their skin was never an issue. It was a thought that never entered my mind until we learned about all the hate people inflicted onto eachother because of religious or race beliefs.
