Religion - Islam
SHOULD WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN IN AMERICA?
Tyler Hurd only had to complete a student teaching assignment of 50 hours at Technical High School in St. Cloud, MN to complete his degree in special education and to receive his teaching certificate. He elected to quit his assignment, however, because of a death threat from one of the students. The threat of death was toward his dog, a black Labrador. Tyler uses a service dog to alert him of an impending seizure and to protect him if one occurs.
The area has a large Muslim population and they consider dogs "unclean". The dog suffered from taunts from some Islamic students and a threat of death because of his presence in the school.
Although Tyler elected to leave because he considered his dog was in danger of harm, no student has been disciplined as a result.

There was no death threat.
It was one Somali student. Why his religion ismentioned, or blamed is anyone's guess.
Can you imagine this story if a Christian kid didn't like someone's dog making it to the news?
He didn't threaten the dog. The TA overreacted.
It has nothing to do with religion. here is a statement from the school.
"I’m really surprised that people are writing to the university rather than the school district, which would not guarantee the service dog’s safety and concluded that the threat the student teacher perceived was “a misunderstanding” and that “the student did not make a direct threat.“

The story was run on FOX News- but it is based upon a false and alarmist premise. Apparently it worked.
Some Muslims choose not to keep dogs in their homes, because the saliva invalidates wudu, or the ablutions one makes when one prays 5 times a day- but that is a personal choice based on incovenience- and has nothing to do with religion. -

No offense, I dont care if its Muslim people or not but I mean if they move to a country that isnt theirs and expect to kill someone's guide dog then they should either bite the bullet or move back to where they came from. This isn't an issue of race its an issue of freedom. This student needed the dog for his condition, it wasn't meant to offend them in any way. -

This is HORRIBLE. I had a seizure alert dog, and if this would have happened to her, I probably would have had a seizure over the stress of her potentially being harmed! If these people don't want to live in a society which has the luxury of medical alert dogs/seeing eye dogs, then they need to go back to their homeland and let us have our freedom! -

And it's definitely illegal to deprive another person the freedom of pursuing his right to earn a living.

raves May 20, 2008 02:58PM GMT (edited)The loss of your monitor would not kill you. If you lost it yourself would that be considered suicide? It might present a inconvience if not replaced over time but I seriously doubt your death would be imminent. The loss of your insulin(oxygen) would be potentaily life threatening though. Two different things. Of course nobody actualy removed his "monitor", only threatened it. If someone said they would break your monitor what do you think the police will do if you even called them? Nothing?

raves May 22, 2008 12:50AM GMT (edited)To late, I have children. Life matters quite a bit to me and I understand it better then you by your posts. Of course anybody that would think that dog fighting and telling a dog your going to kill it are the same thing wouldn't have the mental capabilities to understand life let alone death.
Go step on your monitor. Oh wait, nothing would happen to you. Oh well, go ahead and test your theory anyway.

Welcome to America people.I think we should make certain accomodations in certain areas for different religious beliefs(i.e. Kosher products) but this dog is literally a life ring for this kid; I think the threats against the dog should be taken as threats against him.
