Is Affirmative Action still needed?
Keep in mind that Affirmative Action is based solely on race and or gender and not on income.-

I voted against Obama because I believe his character is flawed but I’m happy we have a black POTUS. Since a black man has now risen to the highest and most powerful office in the world, America has corrected our past civil right injustices against Black Americans. It’s time to abolish black affirmative action laws because they are racist -
raves +1 May 19, 2008 01:26PM GMTUnfortunately, that is not always the case.
For the longest time minorities and women were discriminated against and this was set up with the best of intentions.
Sadly, whenever the government sets out to right a wrong, they end up making things worse.
Affirmative Action is most prevelant in our institutes of higher learning.
If we take 4 applicants with equal grades and merits, one black, one Hispanic. one Asian and one white and they apply to the same college the black and Hispanic ones will have a 100% chance of being admitted while the white and Asian will have about a 5% chance. -

The fact that we have both a female and a black as front runners for POTUS with in a major party gives testimony as to just how far we've come.
Keep in mind that Affirmative Action is solely race and gender oriented, not income. A child of a rich black or Latino family has a far better chance of getting into college than a poor white.
BTW: Why are some minorities not covered under Affirmative Action? I know that Asians, Irish, Italians and Jews have been historically discriminated against, yet Affirmative Action doesn't apply to them. How come? -

I accept that i was necessary in the beginning in order to get women and minorities into colleges and levels of management. Once there, they are able to network and get others into similar positions. Remember that about 85% of the jobs out there are never advertised.
As such, minorities and women have come a long way since the inception of this program. The journey is not over, but do we need to still discriminate against whites and Asians?
Does not the fact that we have a woman and a black man running for the Democratic ticket show how far we've come? -
raves +2 May 20, 2008 01:28PM GMT"no one has ever discrminarted against whites"?!?!?!?
Are you kidding me?
Historically, Jews, Irish and Italians have been discriminated against in this country. Not as much in the last half of the 20th century, but the history is there.
Even today, if your last name is O'Malley or Ferraro or Goldberg some people will not hire you no matter your experience.
Do you have Blue Laws where you live? Blue Laws state that some if not all businesses cannot open on Sundays. They were specifically set up to deprive Jewish shopkeepers of a day's revenues since Jews celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday. It was only in the last 2 years that New York started allowing liquor stores to open on Sunday.
With Affirmative Action, whites AS WELL AS Asians and East Indians are chosen last in order to get in as many blacks and Hispanics. This is regardless of income. A middle class or rich black will be accepted into college before an equally deserving poor white.
Do you really think that it is still necessary to practice this discrimination?

raves May 25, 2008 10:23AM GMTFuzz, I get your points, however Obama is half white, i.e., Euro-American, as is Hillary a white (Euro-American female). Yes, calling someone by color is race based, while calling someone by culture is the issue at hand. I think the problem is the republicans anyhow....................

You get good grades, 3.0 or so, you will be able to get in most state colleges. Most graduate schools will allow anyone to get in on probation, get your 3.5 or your 3.0 for a certain amount of credits and you are in.
College Education and Health Care in my opinion are rights we must all have, they need not cost anything.
If employers and or universities, public entities and so forth are caught discriminating, then put them in jail, make it a crime. We will see how fast discrimination goes away! : )

It's 'Reverse Discrimination'.
