It was about $.65/gallon, right around the so-called "energy crisis". It used to cost me about $5 to fill my first car, a crappy little Datsun 510. It now costs me about $100 to fill my Ford Freestar.
It costs me almost $1,000 to fill my Freightliner... -

You are so right, but it isn't just the fuel - maintenance, insurance, and just plain eating - everything has shot up, yet we are getting the same rate per mile as we were in 1980! Granted, we get fuel surcharges, but there are too many people with their hand in the cookie jar, and quite often only a fraction of the fuel surcharge actually makes it to the one who has to pay for the fuel!
The company I am contracted to works things a little differently - we pay a flat rate for fuel, no matter how high the price goes, and the company keeps whatever fuel surcharges they can get out of the customer.
You are so right about people not understanding the impact of trucking on the country. Nobody remembers what happened in the 70s when Jimmy Hoffa pulled the Teamsters off the road. There were food riots in New York City.
People on the road see the truck in front of them as nothing more than an obstacle in their path, instead of thinking, "tomorrow's dinner may be on that truck." -
