Civic Duty To Vote: Should there be a basic knowledge test to vote?

Although the video included is mainly for entertainment, it queued up some interesting thoughts. Should one have to pass a basic knowledge test in order to register to vote? The majority of people, as seen in the video, couldn't identify major political icons, other than Barack Obama and John McCain. Are these the people you want contributing to who we elect as President of the United States? Do you want people voting who have no idea what the Bill of Rights are? These are fundamentals to government and politics that you learn starting in grade school.

So.. although it may be somewhat discriminatory.. should you have to pass a basic test before being able to register to vote?

Ignorant, uneducated voters will vote for Obama and this is a fact.

Answered No. It's our civic duty to vote, and many have had to fight for the right to vote.

Even so, I feel every voter needs to be educated to the basics of how the government is run. Unfortunately that will never happen, I have educated friends who say some of the dumbest things when it comes to current events and yes even historical events.

If you don't even know who is running and the issues- don't vote. If the color of a person is the only qualification you look at- stay at home. There are a lot of voters this time who is only looking at color and not knowledge of the issues.

If I'm not mistaken, in the early years of the republic, you had to be a land owner (homeowner) to vote. If you have a financial stake in the welfare of the country, I think you will make a more informed decision.

Doubt if you're Gary Busy, but not only does God love everyone, He holds everyone accountable for our actions. Love is not looking the other way when men decide to ignore god's law. Love is not letting your kids get drunk and use drugs because they want to. Love is not letting your country go into the tank because a charismatic leader is going to lead the lemmings into the ocean. God's love has nothing to do with qualifications to vote.

Especially with more groups being allowed to vote, as well as more and more teenagers becoming eligible to vote there ought to be some kind of test or something. What I'ld like to see would be something similar to what you have to go through to get into one of the military academies.

The Bill of Rights doesn't discriminate against the ignorant, nor even the retarded, and, historically, eligibility tests have been used to keep even well-informed, intelligent voters from exercising their rights. No, I'd rather not take a chance of that again.

THE WORST I HAVE SEEN IS TODAY:
The Republican National Committee is distributing a mail piece that says "Terrorists" on the front and opens to a big picture of Barack saying "Not Who You Think He Is."

John McCain -- who promised to run a respectful campaign -- said that he was "absolutely" proud of it!

In this era of time when technology is right at our fingertips, there really is no excuse for not researching.

It’s not like it was forty years ago when you had to rely on the education system, library, newspapers and books. Although the educational system is a good place to start but the problem is who listens when it comes to being in school. When it comes to being a kid the last thing you want to hear or talk about is the political system…if you ask them the first thing they say is BORIng! Although there are a few exceptions out there.

What I do believe is that there should be a mandatory ID system in place to vote, that would elevate all of the fraud that is going on. When you register to vote they should make a photo ID card like they do with your license. I don’t see the problem for those who are serious about wanting a better voting system.

Would we apply the same standard to people that fight in the military?
  • raves     [-] aka replied to no Kidding
Every American should have the right to vote NO MATTER WHAT. It should not be this complicated to be able to vote in this country. IF all children had an equal opportunity to be educated then more people would know and understand the voting process. MOST people have no clue they just spout the rhetoric they see on TV or in the news. We do not make people take a test to have babies. A few uneducated people having babies is A LOT more detrimental to society than a few uneducated people voting.
  • raves     [-] no Kidding replied to aka
My point is this, Both voting and Military service are a service to our country. If a certain level of civic knowledge would be required to vote, why would we allow men and women to go to war if they don't understand the history and reasons behind the action.

Answered No. It's our civic duty to vote, and many have had to fight for the right to vote.

With all the mudslinging and lies in this election, even educated people are having trouble sifting through the muck. Besides, how do you determine education in politics? I may know who is running for POTUS, and maybe who is doing things in my own state; but if I'm supposed to know who is running in other states that are somewhat irrelevant to me and I don't, I will fail. And by no means would I call myself an uneducated person. So, while I think it is sad that some people aren't a little more informed about their choices going into the election, by no means does that take away their status as a citizen, and therefore, should not take away their right to vote. Besides, some people are not educated because they do not have the resources others have; and you will then find a division with income in regards to those who are allowed and those who cannot. It's not right. I believe in making sure a person is a citizen (no illegal immigrants), and send them into the booth. That's it.

Answered No. It's our civic duty to vote, and many have had to fight for the right to vote.

No! They don't need to make it any more difficult to vote. First off they close the registry around voting time. And the provisional ballot? It doesn't even get counted unless there's a tie, even though it is just as available. And we wouldn't even need a provisional ballot if they would just let people register. Then anyone who wanted to register, would be registered, and we would all submit our vote. Not to mention, why is it separated by states. We should count each person as their own vote, not round up and re-count the states. What the hell is that? Just count up all the votes in totality for the whole country, because this state thing is skeevy and not accurate. Then if there's a tie, everyone votes again. Basic stuff here. We need more democracy, not more limitations for those already struggling to be heard.

Answered When it comes to voting rights, I think...

No, if we had a test then there would be all sorts of abuses that would come with it. Certain groups would try to slant it to make it easier for voters with their agenda to pass the test, etc. It is too bad that there are so many ignorant voters, but a government mandated test is not the answer. Plus the questions they asked on the video were stupid. It doesn't matter if people can recognize politicians from photgraphs, understanding an understanding of economics, science issues, and policy issues are the important things to know

Answered When it comes to voting rights, I think...

yea, I think though it should focus on two primary subjects 1) the position of the person they're voting for, and 2) the policies of the few who are running.
although the tests could be bias which could determine the outcome of the election by asking the appropriate questions that a democrat or republican didn't know the answer to, causing them to be eliminated and the opposing party winning by landslide victory
regardless, the tests could never work, but we all could do are civic duty and start researching before we vote
