They want to socialise everything so they have total control over you and I and the rest of the free thinking people in this Country. Gosh, I could go on and on if we get into the world politics that is even more of a night mare for those of us that enjoy freedom. I hope people are ready to face to the east three times a day for forced prayer, and that they are ready to loose their life just for going to the mall to some terrorist bomb.
I am 100% Free thinking American and I choose to remain that way. Enough said.
You can have my GUNS when you pry them from my cold dead hands!!

The question is too loaded for me. We have a brand of socialism now. Many programs administrated by Federal, State and local Governments are socialized. We see hear in America, just like in other democracies around the world, a majority desire and need for the Government to step in take over when the mutual benefit of the citizenry is best served.
Currently, our Government, in league with the other 6 richest nations in the world are in the process of working out a plan to socialize the banking system (which was partially accomplished in the $700 billion rescue package) and more specifically the credit markets. The current proposal to loan money directly to businesses is a form of socialism.
Let us not forget Social Security, Medicare , Medicaid, food stamps, welfare.....
Should we expand or contract our socially friendly society. That might be another question. I would answer expand, in particular we should socialize our medical system. It is past time to act on the idea proposed by Ike. A model that is employed successfully in Canada and throughout Europe.
It is important to recognize that socialized medicine is not practiced by a single communist run, dictator run, or monarchy run nation on the planet. Only citizens of democracies think well enough of each other to care for one another. -
raves +3 Oct 12, 2008 01:20AM GMTSocialized medicine has been employed successfully in Canada and Europe? No offense but that is not what I read about their medical systems. Don't get me wrong, I pay to much for health care and would LOVE to have it 'free' from out government but nothing the government ever does works well. How can you expect they will do anything but botch health care too?

Obama's plan expands existing system
Barack Obama defended his health care plan during a debate in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 7, 2008. His opponents have attacked his plan as "government-run" health care.
"No. 1, let me just repeat, if you've got a health care plan that you like, you can keep it," Obama said. "All I'm going to do is help you to lower the premiums on it. You'll still have choice of doctor."
Obama is accurately describing his health care plan here. He advocates a program that seeks to build on the current system, rather than dismantling it and starting over.
Obama's plan essentially takes today's system and seeks to expand it to the uninsured. It creates national pools for individuals to buy their own cheaper insurance. It increases eligibility for the poor and children to enroll in initiatives like Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. And it has several strategies to rein in costs for everyone, such as streamlining medical record-keeping and emphasizing preventive care. -
raves +3 Oct 12, 2008 03:11PM GMTSounds great, however this is coming from a man that says Bill Ayres was just a man that lived in his neighborhood and Reverend Wright never influenced him even though he spent 20 years in his church. To me character matters. To me the record matters and Obama's record in office is not impressive and his choices in friends shows a lack of judgment. I just can't trust a man that says one thing and does another.

raves +3 Oct 12, 2008 04:33PM GMTCynic [ hey, I'm cynical TOO ] just how is Obama's health plan going to work in the REAL world? If the govt is going to compete in the marketplace with private insurers, wouldn't it tend to drive those contractors out of business? Particularly, if govt insurance covers pre-conditions, marginal patients, the non-paying poor, and all those categories private companies can't --- or won't --- touch, it's just a matter of time before we're ALL suckin' that federal tittie, no?

raves +3 Oct 12, 2008 04:42PM GMTAgree Beer30. Believe me I wish the government was the answer to health care, I am paying out the nose but I will never trust them. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were quasi government entity's and just look what the corruption and lack of ability did to them and our country. WE NEED LESS GOVERNMENT NOT MORE. Obama's ideas sound good but are not what we need. More government is never the answer.

raves +1 Oct 12, 2008 05:07PM GMTRobert, we can't EVEN increase spending because --- alas --- there's no money left. Congress and Bush [ who's never met a spending bill he didn't like ] have pissed it all away.
Obama's going to get a trillion dollars of new funding from w-h-e-r-e??
"Nuthin' up mah sleeve...... PRESTO!!!" -
raves +2 Nov 04, 2008 11:18PM GMTHEY,, you are right about Congress and the Senate. They are a present, for the last two years, run by the Democrats. Oh yeah, the same bunch that somehow stole the hearts of those that the Republicans set free. The Bush bashing has gone far enough, wait, has gone to far!!
-
raves +2 Oct 12, 2008 05:03PM GMTDoc --- you're right, govt is NOT the answer to much of anything. Is there ANYTHING they can be depended upon to do right? Government, by it's very nature, is wasteful, inefficient and more costly than any profit-driven enterprise.
Just tour any VA hospital, then walk down the street to a comparable PRIVATE hospital, and admire the difference. And the private clinics are half-filled with Canadians and Brits, because THEIR socialized systems suck TOO! -
raves +1 Nov 04, 2008 11:13PM GMTI supposeyou belive in fairies and that he will not tax those below what? $250 thousand,$200 thousand,$175 thousand,$125 thousand? There are even some reports that his cut off for what he considers middle class to be $44 thousand. The Medical Fairy is on the way. While the tax Monster slips into your back pocket.

raves +1 Oct 12, 2008 06:53PM GMTI respectfully disagree. We have been told "socialized medicine" is BAD. Calling progressively solving our broken medical system "socialized medicine" is meant to frighten us.
However, when Wall Street need government intervention it is called a "financial rescue" package. BS, it is "socialized banking". But that's OK because it helps the fat cats and the fat cats don't need a "medical rescue" package.
You and me along with enough others have blindly followed the greedy corporate leaders down the wrong path for too long. I don't expect them to change. It is us that needs to change. We need to change who we choose to follow and make sure they are acting in our best interest.
Are Social Security and Medicare bad ideas. I think not. Is a social medical system a bad idea. I think not, even if you are among the wealthy that will share the cost of such to middle class Americans. That's what we do. We are Americans. We help our fellow man. -
raves +1 Oct 12, 2008 07:41PM GMTTom, I believe we agree here more than disagree. If you have read any of my post you know I am against big government mostly because of the inept way they seem to handle everything they become involved in. Also, I was so disappointed in the need for the recent 'bailout'. You are right, the fat cats both in government and on Wall Street screwed the American people big time on that one. So it leaves me torn. I would love to think the Federal Government could truly help out America by making health care work for all Americans, but I don't believe they can put aside their corrupt ways long enough to do so. Call me crazy but the thought of a man like Obama with practically no pertinent skills telling us he can do this is laughable. I feel he will tax and spend America into a recession that is never ending. Do me a favor and convince me otherwise, I would feel much better. :-)
