Will you see Tropic Thunder or will you boycott?
Several groups that advocate for the disabled are calling for a boycott of the new film Tropic Thunder, starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Tom Cruise and Robert Downey, Jr. There are currently 22 groups protesting the movie's satire. The groups are particularly offended by the repeated use of the word "retard" in regards to a subplot character that Stiller plays called Simple Jack. What do you think of this?-

some of the best movies ive watched have been boycotted. I might boycott the boycotters.. kevin smith boycotted his own movie when it came out. Either way people seriously if you dont like it then
All your boycotting is doing is making more people want to see it..plus RDJ is hot as crap and the movie has a cool idea. -

The more stigmas we place on words that are "offensive" and such, the greater chance we have of never getting past it...whatever happened to "sticks and stones, will break your bones, but words will never hurt me"? Labels only have power if we give it power. Political correctness only works for politicians who have to have everybody like them to get elected. When will we be judged by deeds, instead of what was said? Actions speak louder than words. Besides, what good comedian never said anything controversial? -

Have you committed any crimes yet? Keep us posted. And even more disturbing, you PAID 2 more times to view it!!! At these prices, that's MORE offensive! X^D

I'm really tired of this country's longing to stand up for everything. The political correctness towards everything is getting annoying. Everybody has to hear themselves talk and has nothing better to do. It's real simple, if you're offended don't see the movie and move on with your life. Comedy is about breaking down stereotypes by embracing the jokes that underly them. I'm offended that people are offended. get over it. -

Ok wow, I'm sorry im going to have to see the movie. I'm sorry but its a free country anyhow, hell I fight to keep it that way. Wanna waste time and boycott, go ahead. You life anyhow, shouldn't you spend that time with your family, or kids for that matter? Oh well, some people are stupid that way. But like I said its a free country, so go ahead waste your time especially over a freakin movie. As for the black/white deal, I don't see color, or race, ya can be purple an i'd still talk to ya like a friend an such. A person is a person, no matter what. -

I really want to see this movie! It looks so funny. People always call others retarded but it doesn't mean that they are insulting disabled people. It is just a new way of calling someone stupid. My cousin is mentally challenged but he still says that stupid people are "retarded". I think it is dumb of them to boycott the movie. It isn't even making fun of disabled people. If they want to boycott a movie for making fun of mentally challenged people then they should boycott The Ringer. -
raves Aug 21, 2008 04:10PM GMTIf you have seen the movie you would see that Ben doesn't put down people with disabilities. He's making fun of ACTORS who try playing them so they can get an Oscar. And if you analyze RDJ's speech about it, he's actually praising Hoffman's Rainman and Hank's Forest Gump for portraying people who have disabilities but have charm and intelligence.
This whole movie is a funny knock on Hollywood, and has NOTHING to do with putting down people with disabilities. If you are offended, then you are seeing it from the wrong point of view. -

OMG! I saw it last week and I plan on seeing it again this weekend! This was the funniest movie that I have seen this year!! With the whole retarded controversy thing--seriously? People are just being stupid again. If they went to see the movie they would realize how lame their boycott is--not even a major plot device! -

Retard has taken on a meaning all its own now a days. It doesn't mean what it use to mean. People use it now in place of stupid. I personally don't see what the big deal is. And if a person was truely "retarded" would they even know they were being made fun of? -
raves Aug 21, 2008 07:41PM GMTLife is hard, champion causes when everything in your life is perfect and you are held up as an example for others to emulate, your posting sounds like we should pity folks with disabilities, and a disabled person would be the first one to tell you to keep your pity. A disabled person would rather do it for themselves because the consensus is that they are unable to run their own lives. When a group of the people whom you say are offended come out and strongly condemn this film, then I'll pause and reflect, but until then, keep YOUR feelings about YOU and don't try to speak for others...retard means to slow down or bring to a halt, when you apply that to person it just means that mentally they're not as quick as the majority, not that they are unable.

Answered Undecided
I work for an organization that provides services to the mentally and physically disabled. I'm also a woman of color and I've heard JDJr plays a Black man in this film. Humor comes from reality, so I'll probably see it, enjoy it and afterwards have opinions how both could be done differently. Things aren't black-and-white for me...ever.
