These people are idiots. last time I flew with my kids I did so many checks on them they told me to back off - and they're teenagers!
I didn't like leaving my 3 year old alone while I had a *shower* - do you *know* what kind of stuff a toddler can get into.
Once by accident, my seven year old and his friend were left at a movie theater (we were a large group, three cars, and they were in another car) I specifically asked the other two drivers if we had everyone before I drove out...
Got home, the other dad called and asked if I had his kid.... I immediately called the theater- yep, they'd just found them, and they were playing supervised in the game room - they were about to call us.
I made the 45 mile drive back to the theater in a little under half an hour... (once the witness to that drive stopped shaking, the keys were removed from my hand and someone else drove home.).
I was furious at the other parent, and even more so at myself - I didn't do a visual check to count heads. -

But my mother did. My sister used to like to get on the floorboard in the back seat and act like she wasn't there, but you could always tell she was because she was giggling like a nut. My mother would always say, "Oh, it's a shame S... didn't want to come home with us," etc.. One Sunday night we got in the car and all of the way home, Mom was saying her usual stuff about how terrible it was that I didn't have a sister anymore, etc. Neither of us noticed that there were no giggles coming from the back seat and we had left my baby sister standing in the rain in the church parking lot.
My sister never got on the floor board again - an my mother did a head count every time after that (a little redundant since there were only two of us, but it made her feel better)
