Answered I THINK IT MIGHT BE PARTLY TRUE
I think it's partly true, not because I feel like McCain doesn't practice as much "straight talk" as he claims, but because I think it's disgusting that he's running off the fact that he was a POW and a veteran. In fact, I think it's awful for anyone to muster support or sentiment based on decisions they made themselves. I think it's honorable to serve your country, but disgusting to use it as a reason for people to respect you. You should want people to respect you for who you are and your character should not be consumed by only one aspect of your life. -

Answered I DON'T BELIEVE IT
I am a Viet Nam Vet who respects McCain for his heroism. Talk to those in the Hanoi Hilton with him. You people attacking his military experiences make me sick! Wanna call me a "BABY KILLER" again? This is where the rubber meets the road. And I wasn't drafted... I volunteered.

In mid-1968, McCain's father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and McCain was offered early release. The North Vietnamese made that offer because they wanted to appear merciful for propaganda purposes, and also wanted to show other POWs that elites like McCain were willing to be treated preferentially. McCain turned down the offer of repatriation; he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.

Now it is 2008 and you defend the Vietnam War. I suppose you defend the Iraq War also? Nixon pardoned the men who ran off to Canada. Maybe The American People were right about you guys liking to kill. You would think you would say the Vietnam War was a terrible mistake. So many innocent women and babies were killed because you guys had this ego that you would be a war hero. You just proved that the demonstrators were right in the 1960's.

But, strawberry, the fact is we ARE there, and your Hanoi Jane attitude is exactly what feeds the flames against our troops, NOT the government that put them there. Obviously, yours and Grizzly's ignorance is only surpassed by the hatred you hold for all of our troops.

raves Aug 12, 2008 06:08AM GMTLook Ed, If you were in The Vietnam War we are probably close to the same age. If you were there then you should know better. You saw the horror of The Vietnam War. Do you feel it right for The U.S. Government to force men to fight and kill. Most were drafted to Vietnam and had no idea what they had to do or where they were going or why. They came home bitter. All the protestors during that era saw a corrupt government forcing American Soldiers and Vietnamese People to die horrible deaths. Innocent babies did die. We hated the government that put you guys there. In fact if John Kennedy was not killed he would have stopped the Vietnam War. They must have held a gun to Johnson's head to keep it going. That war was big bucks. The troops were young guys who believed in our government. You know what a bunch of crooks and liars we have in Congress and this has gone on for ages. Look at President Bush? I never hated the troops. I don't think they knew what they got themselves into. We hated the government for sending all those men to Vietnam. My friends died there. The Pentagon has always used the ignorance of young men with false promises. Looking back on the Vietnam War would you do it all over again?

raves Aug 12, 2008 06:32AM GMTStrawberry, I was there during our pullout, 74-75, yes, I saw the horror but amazing as that seems, THATS WAR !!! That's why we want to avoid it at all costs. We came home bitter because we were spit on and accused of being baby killers by the very people we were sworn to protect!!! The ONLY thing that we seem to agree upon is that Kennedy would have ended Nam. But, hold a gun to Johnson's head? Hell, Lady Bird had the money, not LBJ, and her fortune was tied up into the war machine, LBJ couldn't afford to end Nam, and he didn't, he escalated it. Looking back at the good people we left to perish when we pulled out, YES, I would do it again!!!

raves Aug 12, 2008 07:02AM GMTMy X-husband was in Vietnam, but as an officer on a merchant marine ship. I was home pregnant at the time in 1969. I remember a young Vietnamese man in my college class who escaped the war. I had him over to my house. He told me how at the end they were running to escape when it was all going down. His young son was running with him. His son fell but he had to keep running and left his son behind. He was living in a motel. When I lived in Nigeria West Africa there was a coup. A bunch of Nigerians started shaking my car blaming The American CIA. I thought it silly at the time, but today I would believe it. Our CIA are big trouble. I do believe they were behind Kennedy's death and Johnson knew his head would be next if he did not do what he was told like keep the war going. I can't see how you would want to go back.

Answered I BELIEVE IT
If these accusations were not true then McCain would not have fought so hard to keep our soldiers from coming home.
