unless it is a terminal illness...i believe it is your right to choose to live or die, however, it is most likely a reactive(non analytical) situation that is causing one to make a suicide choice, so unless you are already dying, you need to resolve the problems that are causing you to want to die.....

Answered Yes, its a persons right to commit suicide.

If a person is still competent to make their own medical decisions, then they should have the right to decide to terminate their own life, and once that decision is made I think they are entitled to do so in a way that will avoid suffering, such as taking a simple pill.

We have had Supreme Court cases over whether it is "cruel and unusual" for a condemned murderer to be executed by injection, yet we have no concern about how "cruel and unusual" it is to force someone to stay alive when they choose not to.

People should have the right to choose on life issues. Had I known I would never be able to conceive children I would of liked to of been about to sign a form asking the surgeon to just put me to sleep(allow me to die) on the operating table.

It's a very definite statement. It happens all the time. I personally have thought about it on a couple of occasions, but I'm too chicken to do it. I'm glad I'm a chicken! Life is great!

You had better not go anywhere! The world is a better place because of people like you!!

And it should only be done at the consent of the person or his/her healthcare surrogate, AND, only after much consideration. It must be done out of compassion and love.

I'm sorry, but I'm all for Euthansia. If someone is suffering, why does the government feel it necessary to make them suffer more and intervene?
Everyone should have that right- if they have excepted death and are terminally ill, then we need to respect it.

There are some people who are in great pain but not terrminally ill, who feel they have no quality in life. Assisted suicide would take a lot of anxiety off the shoulders of relatives and the person departing the world. Some people go to the Netherlands, where assisted suicide is legal.

Yes. There is a ballot measure in Washington state this november just for that. It has safe guards and is patterened after the Oregon law that has been in effect for ten years. Suicide as it stands now, is only illegal if you screw it up. Because if you do it correctly, they will never 'get you.'

i'm also watching that measure closely..it's got my vote in november

Yes I believe you should have the right to end your own life if that's your wish for whatever reason.

Answered Yes, but only for the terminally ill

This is the next big morality issue in the country. "Right" doesn't enter into it. Each person has the ability to take their own life. Those who are terminally ill, with no chance of recovery, should be offered a way to exit life with some shred of dignity. Having watched to close relatives die of cancer...shrivel away to nothing, fighting pain every step....sometimes there were moments I would have gladly assisted them. There wasn't much dignity to their deaths until the very bitter end.

personaly i would extend it to anyone with a condition so painful or disabling that they would prefer death. after nursing for years (not any more burned out) and caring for many dying family members i would not limit it to a 6 month life expectancy. if i developed a disorder that would deprive me of my body and mind while leaving me to live for years in a shell, i would put an end to it as soon as i realized that my future was a bleak stretch of pain or mindlessness. i would certainly hope for the compassion we show our beloved animal companions.

You got me there, almost in tears. I've been through that with family members and have 3 now in interminable pain, but not yet within range of fatal disease. One of them tried it and wound up in a terrible psychiatric bin. She's OK now, still suffering. I believe if she could have turned to "assisted" she'd have known it wasn't time yet. Lucky to still have her around.
  • raves +1   [-] by cronewinter
it's so hard isn't it..i've heard that in oregon just knowing the option is there helps some go all the way to the "natural" end. knowing there's an out seems to give courage. you take good care of yourself to, the caregivers needs tend to be forgotten and it can make you sick. remember to take time every day for yourself even if it's just for a long, relaxing bath. call in offers, all those folks who say "i wish there was something i could do"? tell th3m there is..please sit for an hour or so so i can go to the (fill in the blank). hang in there.

---1 How can one really put safeguards in place to prevent someone from killing and calling it 'assisted'.
---2 Like Joni Eareckson Tada, many in tragic moments see death as an escape, when they could actually become visions of hope for others.

Anyone at anytime is free to kill themselves. It happens all the time. That's why we have suicide prevention social programs. The death with dignity specifically deals with folks with terminal illness.
  • raves +4   [-] by Jwalden
yes. but, it can still be abused. the dead person cannot file suit for 'wrongful practice'.
  • raves +2   [-] by Mollybdamned
HI J. Nice to see you. What can be abused? and how. please advise.
  • raves +2   [-] by Jwalden
    presume

a family member encouraging the elderly or severely handicapped towards allowing the 'assisted suicide'.
What prevention will prevent a relative or 'professional' from inducing the 'remedy' 'for the betterment' of 'whatever' reason they deem fit.?
  • raves +4   [-] by Mollybdamned
Hi J. I know i have the particulars on my post about initiative 1000. It's got safeguards in it. I am sure family members can be manipulated one way or the other, the case that, that might happen is no reason to take it away from the rest of us. Family members could encourage, manipulate a person to suffer, hooked up to tubes for several weeks, constantly in pain, because the family member doesn't like the option of assisted suicide. Dysfunctional people like that don't run my world, or would I let them interfere with this intiative.
